Ok, I have an area in my new house that is sort of like a bench. It is at the top of my stairway and has a ledge and a window above it. I want to make a cushion to put on the bench part so we can sit on it and make it a little area. I was thinking of buying some thick foam and making one big long cushion but I don't know how to cover it. I don't own a sewing machine and am not too good with a needle and thread. Is there any other way I can do this? I need some ideas.

I think there is a velcro that doesn't require any sewing...maybe pick up some of that and wrap some nice fabric around it? I'm not sure...I'm not really good at this stuff, but maybe someone else can work off of what I've written?

I like to use those snaps that you hammer on & not sew.

you could always close it with fabric glue. I love that stuff. or use the glue on the velcro. Which ever. But seeing i use to do tons of crafts and i hate to sew that is what i used. hope it helps

Can you buy a pillow and pillow case to go there? Is it bigger than a body pillow? Maybe a pillow case to cover your foam. Or wrap a sheet neatly around it and maybe you could add some pillows?

i saw something like this somewhere. you can have someone cut a piece of wood (plywood would do) to fit it. then put your foam on top of that. then use a staple gun to atatch the fabric (to the under side of the wood). or you could glue or nail it to the under side. hope this helps. am i making myself clear?!?!:toothy:

These are all great ideas! Thanks so much! I like the idea of the wood with the foam on top and then stapeling it together. I put my body pillow on it to see if it would fit and it is longer than that so maybe I can just use a bunch of pillows instead. The lady at Wal-Mart said that people have a hard time finding foam. Any ideas on where to find it?

We purchase foam at stores that sell camping supplies. Hardware stores, or stores that have a camping section. We buy foam when we buy our sleeping bags.

I cannot remember what we paid(plus it would be in Canadian dollars), but I do remember it was quite reasonably priced for a sheet of foam larger than a good sized sleeping bag.

I get my foam at JoAnn's Fabrics....I don't know if you have one there .....

I did my front porch chairs this year. Dh cut scrap plywood, I got foam from Joann's (approx. $5 total for 4 chairs), set the foam on the board and wrapped in a nice striped heavy cotton denim (Walmart $2 yard) then folded the corners and stapled. They have held up to daily use all summer and took about an hour. Just make sure you use a heavy duty material if you staple, otherwise when the seat is used, the staples can tear the fabric--I first tried this with a piece of sheet and it didn't hold up to actual use.
