View Full Version : Sorting Laundry ???
Mumbose 09-05-2002, 03:01 PM Just wondering how everyone sorts their laundry.
Dh says I am a compulsive sorter LOL I make a mountain out of a mole hill.
I feel like I need to wash certain colors and certain items by themselves. He would just throw everything together!
I usually sort and wash loads of:
Blue jeans
Dark color shirts
Light/bright color shirts
Socks and Underware- use bleach
White t-shirts
Reds
Grays and browns together
Bath towels and wash cloths
Kitchen towels and dish cloths- use a little bleach
Sheets and pillow cases
Throw rugs
Do I oversort? Where can I combine to save time and money?
Thanks for any suggestions!
Lori
aylasmommy 09-05-2002, 03:53 PM Where I would combine, is kitchen towels (bright) with the bright shirts..
Ditto for the dark colored towels with dark clothes, white towels etc..
I think doing blue jeans alone is ok..but I usually mix that with dark shirts, and even my dh's white socks since they never show anyways it doesn't matter to me how white they are :)
I think I usually try to do pinks/reds as a set by themselves..if it's really bright red and I've never washed it, I think i wash it seperatly, or with black jeans?
Oh you could also combine your white shirts with the white socks and underwear, and white pants etc..
Just how I'd do it at least
Kimmomo3 09-05-2002, 04:22 PM I do not sort at all and it kills my MIL but she would have never known till she saw me do laundry. Everything gets perfectly clean.
Each bed room and bathroom have a laundy basket and we put kitchen stuff down the shoot to it's own basket.
So when one is full I take it down and put it in the washer it is the size on one load. If the kids have a 1/2 basket I combine and wash. But whites and jeans all get washed together. I have had no problems with this. Some of my delicate stuff gets put in a different bin and washed separatly but that is rare since I don't have much that is delicate.
Jenlee 09-05-2002, 05:07 PM I never wash towels with anything else. As for clothes, one is for cold and one is for warm.
kcjulesus 09-05-2002, 05:38 PM I used to never sort laundry either and ended up with very few off colored clothing.
I do sort now though, for some reason! I only sort by lights and darks. On occasions I will only wash kitchen towels, dish clothes, bath towels and washclothes. And about once or twice a month I gather all whites and bleach them.
summercat 09-05-2002, 06:07 PM I usually sort my clothes
I wash all my dd's clothes
wash my clothes
wash towels & wash cloths together
Jerseygirl 09-05-2002, 10:57 PM I sort, but not compulsively. I do whites in one load, light colors-beige, grey, pastels in another then darks, navy, hunter maroon, black and brown as another. All of my bath towels and hand towels etc are navy blue or have some form of navy in them so they go right in with the darks. My kitchen towels are mostly really light and worn so they usually go in with the whites with lots of bleach and hot water.
lucy979 09-06-2002, 03:47 AM I wash all the whites, underwear, socks in hot water. Everything else gets put into another load with warm water.
jettsmom 09-06-2002, 12:10 PM I sort by whites, darks and colors, sheets, towels and sometimes light colors. Just depends on how much there is. I don't wash towels with clothes because the towels leave lint on some clothes especially sweats. I usually have 4-5 loads a week.
Mumbose 09-06-2002, 11:58 PM I took some of your suggestions and combined a few loads( I still feel weird but I think I can manage LOL) and the clothes came out just as clean. Woohoo!!! I just have to keep telling myself - I am making less work & spending less money-- just toss it in!
Thanks everyone for all your suggestions:D
milach 09-09-2002, 01:41 PM Oh my goodness- you are making alot more work for yourself than necessary. I do 3 loads a week- one for lights (socks, underwear, brights, light colored towels and clothing), one for darks and another just for jeans (since the jeans make a full load by themselves anyways). I will mix lights and darks once in a while just so I can look at an empty basket for once in my life.
As long as your blue jeans have been washed several times- you can even throw them in with lights to make a full load, so you're not doing 2 half loads. The only thing I really insist on not washing with my light clothes are reds. Seems like no matter how many times reds have been washed- they always run.

Mommy2Tyler 09-09-2002, 01:49 PM I think you are making it harder for yourself and also wasting water/money doing all of those loads!
I do Lights and Darks... Period. :)
Most time towels seperate if there are alot, if not I throw em in with the rest.
bamamomto4 09-20-2002, 10:29 AM I'm a lil late on this one but I just found it LOL!!!
Anyways...I wash Katie and Jackson clothes in one load.Ashleys clothes in one load and her whites in one load ..once a week.
I do mine and dh's lights and darks together and towels, underwear, socks (anything white) in hot water. If I have alot of colored clothes,I do all jeans then whats left in a seperate load. I also have about 8 dark green and blue towels I wash in one load.
I wash bedding seperate and hardly ever wash everyones bedding on the same day.
I wash Mine and Steves church clothes together but not with the everyday clothes :)
Guess everyone has their own lil system :)
