View Full Version : Long Hair?
quiltergirl 08-08-2007, 10:04 PM Anyone else have long hair? Mine is just below my waist. I won't even go to the hairdresser anymore -- got tired of a "tirm" being 12 inches. I do cut my own bangs and DH trims the ends a couple times a year.
I wear it up for special occasions (and when visiting my mother) and put it in a ponytail when I work out. I can't believe I'm fifty and my mom still tells me to get my hair out of my face. Most of the time I wear it down -- yes I do like to show it off.
Anyone else?
many houseapes 08-08-2007, 11:09 PM I am exactly like you:)My hair is below my waist & I gave up on hair salons for the same reasons.....hairdressers scare me.lol. I feather my bangs & dh trims the ends every few months....I don't trust anyone else, either:)
I am going to grow mine out, bangs and all for frugal reasons. I dont like the way the my bangs look when I cut them myself and my hair grows so fast I dont want to pay for a trim every three weeks. Right now my hair is shoulder lenght but it would have been longer if my last haircut hadnt gone so bad. The hairdresser screwed up the style I wanted and he had to cut it way too short.
Libby 08-09-2007, 12:28 AM I guess you could say I have long hair
It was halfway between where the bra strap goes across your back and my butt. I just went and had a trim b/c the layers were getting ratty. I also need to keep my hair in healthy condition as I want to keep growing it out so I can hack it off and donate it. Its taking everything in me to NOT cut it off now and not donate it....I figure if I can keep it long for 2 yrs straight for weddings, another yr or yr and half wont kill me.
How I wear it? Um...usually clipped up or in a ponytail. Im not one who does her hair - more of wash and go kinda gal.
fernykins 08-09-2007, 12:48 AM I use to have long hair passed my A**. I cut it after I got really sick and couldn't take care of it......... There are times I miss it.

sunshine 08-09-2007, 08:20 AM Mine varies -- right now, it's just past my shoulders. I follow the Native American tradition of only cutting my hair when I'm grieving. As long as I have at least 10 inches when it's cut, I donate it to locks of love. I donated 18 inches 2 years ago on the 4th of July, when my FIL died, and I donated 11 inches this April when my aunt died.
frugalfarmwife 08-09-2007, 08:37 AM When it's wet my hair is about 1/2 way down my back, however my father blessed me with his super fine hair and mom blessed me with her curls, and as I get older it gets curlier and curlier (think shirley temple PLUS!) In this hot weather I twist it and put it up with one of those spring/claw clippies on top of my head. I end up with little curls springing out everywhere :)

boogiemum 08-09-2007, 08:55 AM I don't have long hair, but my hubby trims my hair for me every few months. I trim my bangs and put layers in myself. I don't want to pay for the hair dresser.
Daisygirl 08-09-2007, 09:05 AM I just last month donated 14 inches to Locks of Love. I had gone in to get a fair bit cut off and the hairdresser said, "Just a couple more inches and it is enought to donate." She knows me well and knew that I would be interested in that. So I said "Go for it!" Huge change, let me tell you. I don't love it but I don't hate it either. It's just hair, it'll grow.
FrugalMomof3 08-09-2007, 10:49 AM My hair is what I would call long, it's to my bra strap and a little below it, I had it cut last year and boy I wish I didn't, I want to grow my hair to be to my butt :)
quiltergirl 08-09-2007, 10:57 AM Do any of you spend more on product for your long hair? I'm not a big lotion, potion and fragrance gal -- I don't even wear makeup. When my hair was short I always bought whatever shampoo was under $1, but since my hair has been long I have had to spend more. I also have to use more different products. I currently use not only shampoo and conditioner, but a spray leave in detangler. I used to get terrible knots and tangles before I found that.
I have used Pantene off and on for years. When Walgreen's came out with a store brand I switched to that. I used a salon product for awhile. I bought it at a warehouse beauty supply store on 40% off day. But they stopped making it and I went back to the Walgreen's version of Pantene. I've had several product discontinued on me.
I also can only use a wide pick on my hair when it is wet. Once dry I can brush it which I try to do daily for shine.
My hair is very thick, but it is also very fine. Over the years I have noticed that my hair has changed in texture and even color depending on where I lived, what I ate and drank and my general health. When we lived in Colorado and I was drinking local mineral water my hair turned red. We are on a diet heavy in fresh fruit and veggies now and my hair is in really good shape.
I don't process my hair in any way -- no perms or color. I am graying naturally and so far I like the look. My mother had a severe reaction to hair dye so I won't even try it.
I don't think I would have long hair just to save money, but that's just me. I also choose not to donate my hair but I think it's a great thing for people to do -- if they want to. I don't think anyone should be pressured into donating hair. A couple of people try with me, but it doesn't work.
Long hair can be a real pain (sometimes literally if it gets caught or I sit on it), but it can also be a real pleasure.
frugalfarmwife 08-09-2007, 11:32 AM I would look silly with short hair :) I'm so tall and skinny and it's so curly I'd look like a mop!
I do use pantene, it's the one name brand product that is worth it to me, I also use a product called Curl Ease which is actually a silicone and it only takes a TINY dab. Mine is so fine I really can't comb it, so I finger comb it when it's wet and let it fly.
We also have well water which is REALLY hard on hair, when I used cheap shampoos my hair was like a head of straw.
As for color, thanks to dad I'm the ONLY family member that's not grey. Mom had black hair with a streak at 18, 2 brothers the same, the other brother brown but went grey. I get the occasional grey sticking out from time to time but am currently in war mode on them :)

Luv2BeFrugal 08-09-2007, 04:20 PM My hair is very dark brown (can see auburn in it in the sun), very fine, and VERY straight. It's just below where my bra goes across my back right now...it used to be below my waist...I kinda miss it...but I don't miss the work it took.
I use salon products, but get them on sale. My hair just did not like anything I tried from Walmart... :(
nuisance26 08-09-2007, 05:23 PM ~I had so-long-you-can-sit-on-it hair until I was 17 and I had it cut mid-back. My hair is way too thick to be that long. I felt like 'thing' from the Addams Family. Now I do the Locks of Love thing too. I'm 1 inch away from getting it chopped again. This will be my third donation. My hair grows from a shoulder bob to near waist in 18 months. Long hair is gorgeous but I MUCH prefer mine short to medium length.~
bridge 08-09-2007, 05:48 PM My Hair is lower back length. I have been growing it long forever. I get a occasional notion to cut it, but it passes by quickly. About 5 years ago I let my bangs grow out. Best thing I ever done!! No more $$ for just getting the bangs cut. My hair is board straight. I have the remains of a perm. I doubt I ever get another, for the fact that it cost $70+ and it took all day and my head felt like it was going to fall off it was so heavy. I didn't think I could take it, however after sitting thru all that rolling time I wasn't giving up :)
I use Jason shampoo & Conditioner.
I also do the nopoo sometimes, which is using baking soda, and a vinegar rinse. I go back and forth between these. The shampoo/Cond is a splurge persay. I also have a conditioner spray that I use if I get a really bad tangle. I've had it for a year or longer. Don't use it much but great to have if I get a nasty tangle!!
I wear my hair up in a bun most of the time (especially in the hot summer)
I also wear it pulled up in a loose"flippy" bun when I sleep. I hate to wake up because my hair is stuck or being pulled...
quiltergirl 08-09-2007, 07:59 PM I hate to wake up because my hair is stuck or being pulled...
Or groomed by the cat...:purpcat:

Saveing money isnt my only reason , it more like an extra reason. I wont let it get much past my bra strap even if I do have to pay for a trim once a year or something. I have very thick hair.
I dont want to offend anyone but Im not a big fan of extremly long hair.
quiltergirl 08-09-2007, 08:34 PM All I meant is that I put a lot of time and effort into my long hair as well as spending more money on product as I said before. I have also had a few "mishaps" along the way like the time I got my hairbrush stuck in my hair -- not fun. I've also caught it in the car door and sometimes my hair "pins me down" in bed. And let's not talk about wind -- have you ever been "hair whipped?" I think those here with long hair can probably relate to all that.
I love my long hair, but if I wanted to save money I think I (personal statement about myself) would look for another way to do it. That's all. As I said the first time that's just me. You don't owe me an explanation for anything you do.
KatieInLa2 08-09-2007, 10:15 PM My hair is down to the waistband of my jeans. It is very fine and straight. I have been growing it out for locks of love. Getting it cut after school starts. Infusium is the best shampoo for my hair. I usually keep it cut shoulder length but somehow I quit cutting it when I lost my Grandmother, mother and niece in a short span of time.
cab54 08-10-2007, 12:25 PM Until last summer, I had always had longer hair.....not really LONG hair because MY hair only gets to about 3" past my shoulders and then stops growing. Has always been that way. It doesn't seem to 'break off' it just seems to stop growing. Doesn't matter if I have it trimmed or don't, or what I use on it. I'm like a dog. It has one length and if cut, will grow back to that length and not one mm. more. :shake: It's weird. I have 3 sisters and their hair can grow to their waist or more.
But, I do love my hair as long as I can get it. I cut it last summer (as stated) and am growing it out (it's getting much longer, about shoulder length) and I wish I hadn't. If it's long, you can always hide the fact that you're having a bad hair day. Up in a clip, back in a barrette, whatever.
Mine is fine, thin and wavy, and tends to frizz in humidity (like now). I do need a little bit more products in it when it is longer--leave in 'something' like a smoothing cream or a serum, for one. I haven't found much difference in price of products though, the cheaper ones work just as well as the pricey for me. For instance, I use Suave healthy curls mousse that I get at Walmart for 1.93 or something like that. And the $1 shampoos and conditioners are fine for me. I have tried expensive stuff and my hair looks and feels the same. It seems to be the stuff I put into my hair AFTER washing and conditioning it that makes the difference, like something leave-in. That Suave healthy curls mousse is called healthy because it has conditioners in it, so I love it. And ONCE in a great while they put a Suave styling products coupon in the paper. :cheer4:
Libby 08-10-2007, 01:41 PM Hmm...do I use special or 'extra' products for my hair? No. I just use whatever I feel like trying on a whim. Right now I have about 3 sets of shampoo/conditioners on the go in my shower cubicle
Herbal Essence - White Peach
Wella Shampoo and a Tressame Conditioner
Bath & Body Works Volumizing - Black Raspberry & Vanilla
As long as the shampoo isnt creamy and the conditioner is creamy enough to not let my hair get snarled up during the course of the day - its good to go!
B/C I just had my bangs trimmed back a lil - as in back to being bangs again - I use a bit of mousse or gel to tame them.
As for hair snarls? I have tried to get outta bed and leaned on my own hair before pulling me back into bed  or tried to turn over and BF was laying on it or it got caught up in his goatee . But I agree...it can be a bit disturbing if you were to wake up only to find a cat sitting on it, chewing it and grooming it LOL!!!!
cab54 08-22-2007, 12:34 PM LOL, Shorty, I used to have a female Beagle that liked to chew my hair. The first time it happened I woke up on the couch and she was lying up near my head and chewing on my hair!:screwy: She was my sweety, but a weird dog. Every once in awhile I would wake up and she would be up on the bed and chewing my hair, Yuck. Not to mention, chunks of it would be gone! Or shredded-looking. It was about 2-3 " past my shoulders and I always wore it up in a clip to go to work anyway, so I could hide it. She finally stopped when dh caught her doing it one time and chased her off the bed.
many houseapes 08-22-2007, 01:31 PM I always wear a braid when I go to bed.Otherwise dh would roll over on it.lol
foxxyroxie 08-22-2007, 02:02 PM Now it's right around the 'bra-strap' region; front and back all one length and I LOVE IT!! It's the longest it's ever been. I just wished I had some curl to it. It's stick straight and I have tried every curling method known to man, perms (they never last past 2 months and at $60 I can't justify the cost), hot rollers, rag roll, bobby-pin curls, everything. Oh well. Most of the time it's either in a spring clip or in a pony tail. If I'm in a zany mood, I'll put it in Pippy Longstocking braids.
When I was a girl, mom like pixie cuts (UGH!!!!) so my hair was very short. Then as I got older, I rebeled but it never go much past just above the shoulder before I would get frustrated with it and have it cut and styled.
As far as products, I have found that VO5 is both the best for my hair and the cheapest (.69 cents a bottle on sale!!). I really like the pink one -- I think it's strawberry champagne or something like that. Right now I'm using up some stockpile; raspberry shampoo with volumizing conditioner. I will have to say I think I like the volumizing conditioner because it seems to be strengthening my hair.
My roomies think I'm weird becaus whenever I feel my hair is getting dry, especially the winter and dry heat, I take baby lotion or creamy baby oil (I use $$ store stuff) and rub it into my scalp and into the hair, making sure I get the ends. I've even used my cocoa butter lotion when I'm out of baby stuff. I let it sit in my hair overnight (you can cover it if you want to but my hair soaks it up so fast there's really no need for me to) and wash it when I shower in the morning. I does work, for me anyway.
baxjul 08-22-2007, 02:58 PM Mine was always long until just before chemo when I donated it. Then, of course, I did the bald look! It was long and straight, now it is curly and I have no clue what to do with it! It is about 3 inches long (I wish it would grow faster), and very curly. Any suggestions for the curls? Of course the humidity down here doesn't help.

Hahahaha and here we thought only cats hacked up hairballs!

Wow do you have before and after pics I could see? Would love to see how your hair decided to start curling! If its too personal I totally understand. Or you can PM me instead if you wish.
A temp at my work was asking me for help and I had to keep going back to her desk to assist her. She finally stopped behind me at the photocopier today just to take a huge inhale of my hair (near the back part b/c its so long) and I turned to catch her in the act! "ARE YOU SNIFFING MY HAIR!" she was so embarassed but she liked the smell of my B&BW shampoo  Both my bosses sit by the copier and heard the whole thing and we all died from laughing so hard. Poor girl!
I had my hair trimmed a lil and now - it just gets caught in my armpits whenever I wear it down :( Up it goes when Im at work!
mom2knk 08-23-2007, 01:19 AM I have curly hair so when it is wet it is down to my lower back but once it dries it is more mid back in length.
Judi Dial 08-25-2007, 07:52 PM Mine is to the middle of my back. When I started "the change" I got the wavy hair I'd had as a young girl back, which I like. But it means that I deal with "frizzy" hair, which I haven't since I was a very little girl. (My mom died when I was 3 and my dad had my hair cut in a pixie until I was in highschool.)
Anyway, because of the way my hair grows (the bottom of my nape it grows straight out!) and the frizziness, I have to have it trimmed 3-4 times a year. It's thick, wavy, and brittle, so it gets lots of split ends. The times I've asked DH to do something with my hair have been a disaster.
When it's an emergency and/or we're reallly broke, I have a neighbor do it, who used to work in a salon. Has cost me as little as $5 and as much as $10.

changed4life 08-26-2007, 07:46 AM Mine is long too. Not as long as some of you (just to my bra strap).
What is it with guys and long hair?? My husband wants me to keep growing it. I don't mind. I've had it all kinds of ways from the 80's wild woman style to the short spikey cropped look.
Now, even though I'm 44 I don't see me ever cutting it short again.
My hair is very straight and very thin and between my bra-strap and my waist. This is generally about the length I keep it. It's been like this since I was little. I can't imagine how I'd do anythign else with it, it's so straight and thin.
lucky_mom 09-14-2007, 11:22 AM I am trying to grow my hair long. It is past my shoulders right now.
My son has never had a haircut. He is 22 months. I think his hair is beautiful. He still looks like a baby because of it too! I might trim it when he is 3. But that is a long way off lol!
Moontidearts 09-16-2007, 05:22 AM I recently cut off 20" and then visited a large group of friends that only see me about half a dozen times a year. NO one recognized me. It had been to the middle of my back, wildly curly, but I showed up with a chic, short, STRAIGT! bob, and I was just amazed that not one single person knew who I was. It was an amazing change (and a lot of fun to "trick" everyone).
Droppedonmyhead 09-16-2007, 11:01 AM I generally have had long hair my adult life. (I was forced to have a pixie haircuit as a child until I was 16 years old). My hair was always so straight, then a few years ago I noticed that it was getting curly. So I cut if off in short layers to enhance the curls. It was okay for a while, but I got so tired of the curls every day. So I grew it back out. Now it is slightly past my shoulders cut in a bob. I actually prefer my hair to be long enough to be pulled back and out of my face when I'm home.
My hair is super fine. . .and super thick. Hairdressers have always told me that I have enough hair for 3 people. A blessing. . .unless you have to live with it every day.
Drgnfly423 09-17-2007, 12:58 AM I've decided to grow my hair back out. Right now it is just past my shoulders. I love long hair, though. I made a list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. One of those things is to not cut my hair (just trims) for those 1001 days. That is May 2010. Hopefully it will grow down to my butt still. =)
frugal-fannie 11-03-2007, 04:34 PM I just cut mine off for locks of Love my daughter 15 years old did hers so I just finally reached the 12 inches to send in. I still have to send them both in. I am growing mine back out again.
mikandmari 11-03-2007, 04:39 PM Mine is long also, and wavy. I get a professional cut twice a year, otherwise I cut and feather the bangs myself. I hate paying for the cut, but I like the length a bit layered, it curls better.
It's the only part of my body aging well! :sigh:
t'rose 12-03-2007, 01:36 PM I'm fifty and have always had long hair. I used to trim it once or twice a year, and it never grew past my waist. I stopped that a couple of years ago and now I can sit on it. Not fun. I was slouched in my desk chair yesterday and ran over the ends with the casters.
It's back in a braid most of the time now, but I wore it loose for many years. I learned to keep it inside my coat when I lived in a major city though. Imagine your hair snagged on the buttons of someone two people behind you and still walking away...
I've been thinking about trying just castile soap to wash and a vinegar rinse. I don't usually use expensive stuff, but I like the Garnier Fructis products i have right now.
bamber 12-03-2007, 01:46 PM I used to have long hair, in high school. I cut it off and now I am around shoulder length. I miss my long hair and want to grow it out again. My longest lenght was below the waist, to the hip bones exactly. I got it cut back to waist and kept it there for a while. Then bra strap length....then shoulder, then chin. After that I bleached my naturally almost black hair blonde, then I was a redhead, now I'm back to dark brown again and growing my hair out some.
ETA: I did not spend more money when I had long hair. I didn't use many products for it to look good. I now use two products for curly, or one for straight. I also dry my hair every time I wash it, which uses electricity, then use a straightening iron, which also uses electricity, and time. Those also cost money to buy in the first place. I have to wash my hair more often, which uses more shampoo/cond. When I wore my hair long and curly, I washed it once every 5-6 days, sometimes I just washed with conditioner. Which used a cheap (88 cent) conditioner, but alot of it. Did a vinigar rinse sometimes too, el cheapo.

Oh I used to use castile soap to wash my hair! I forgot about that. I used Kirks Castile (I think it is Krikscastile.com) but I would condition afterwards. Made my curls great. Doesn't work so well with short hair though.
Nantahala 12-09-2007, 10:02 AM Long hair here, only trim it about once every six months and get it thinned out as well, since I have typical NDN hair - straight as a stick and thick but fine.
Shampoo does nothing for me, I use baking soda to wash and apple cider vinegar mixed with water to rinse. Perfect PH balance and I only wash twice a week now, down from daily when I used shampoo.
stacyz 12-19-2007, 03:07 PM My hair is almost to my waist. I get a trim once a year, usually about 6" to get rid of split ends. I have 3 daughters and they all have long hair as well. The two olders down to their waist. I called my 8yodd "Crystal Gale" one day and then of course had to google a pic to show her. Now she is facinated with long hair and wants to grow hers just as long.
When I was 5 my mum had my hair cut into a bob. I looked like a boy until I was about 12 when I was finally allowed to make my own hair decisions. The last time it was short was for my pap's funeral in 2001. I plan to grow it as long as my dh can stand it. He often rolls over on it at night too.
The animals grooming your hair is really funny. I once had a cat that would lick my ex's ear-for hours!! lol!!
northernmom2boys 12-19-2007, 03:12 PM My hair is very straight and very thin and between my bra-strap and my waist. This is generally about the length I keep it. It's been like this since I was little. I can't imagine how I'd do anythign else with it, it's so straight and thin.
My post has nothing to do with hair lol
I just had to say yor little boy is just adorable
SweetPea 12-20-2007, 09:54 AM After many years of having very short hair, I'm growing mine out. Right now it's at shoulder length with bangs. I want to have bra strap length hair. The growing out process was tough for someone who was used to 2 inch hair all over. I love my hair now, the only thing I don't like is the shedding!
Tiajean 12-20-2007, 02:32 PM My hair is a couple inches past my bra strap. Growing up, I had hair past my bum until I was about 13 and then cut it all off. since then, it's been just about every 3-5 years I will grow my hair out past my bum and then chop it all off to a pixie cut, have that for a couple months and then grow it out again because I don't like the upkeep LOL The last time I did it a few years ago, (I had dreadlocks - two weeks of undoing them and getting them untangled) I was able to cut 24 inches off and donate it to Lock of Love. I kept it short for about a year and then decided to grow it out. Thank goodness I decided at the time I did or else I wouldn't have had the longer hair for my wedding! It still wasn't as long as I wanted to have it, but it was nice :)
I was only using the V05 because it was cheaper, but my hair is very wavy, very thick, and somewhat course. I love garnier fructis and I figure I'm worth the splurge. Since it's winter, I will only wash my hair every other day and I only condition it once a week. I also only brush it twice a week. I can get away with this because I work from home and I wear my hair back most of the time. I get the urge to go back to dreads once in a while, but change my mind again LOL anyway, when I condition and brush it, it comes out so healthy and silky. I'm hoping this time I won't get the urge to cut it all off and just let it grow as long as possible. My DH is willing to learn how to braid my hair so it will not tangle up so bad while I'm sleeping, but he refuses to cut/trim it for me. He much rather I go to the salon and get it done. I haven't been there since February and am in need of a cut badly so I will be going back soon for a cut. I do dye my hair every month usually. I have considered letting it grow with my streaks of grey, but DH has said he likes it better all one color (doesn't like highlights either LOL).
SaucyCranberry 12-21-2007, 03:11 PM Another long-haired lady here. My hair is almost to my waist (and I'm tall-ish, so it has to grow a bit to get there, LOL). My DH is a fan of long hair and freaked the few times I cut it, so it will stay long until it looks ridiculous on me. Now I just have to take care of these grays that are popping up. YUCK!
justpeachy92 12-21-2007, 05:18 PM I wish I had long hair, I haven't had it cut in over a year. My hair seems to stop growing once it gets just past my shoulders.
larabelle 01-05-2008, 09:18 PM My hair is a little past my shoulders. I color it myself as I refuse to go gray. I refuse to cut it and I wear it up with hair sticks. I trim it myslef every once in a while. It is alot easier to care for at this length compared to shorter. I have found that all natural products work great for it such as coconut oil for conditioner.
vigilant20 04-21-2008, 05:40 PM I don't cut my hair at all for religious reasons. It stopped growing at about waist length. It looks slightly shorter these days because I keep it permed. It's more manageable that way and then all I have to do to get ready in the morning is scrunch and go!
truepeacenik 11-02-2008, 06:35 PM I know this is a total necro-threading move here, but I'm hoping it is OK in kith.
I have hair past my bum. I cannot say it is at thigh, but by the end of Feb it should be.
I don't spend much of general care. I have shampoo bars and I use vinegar rinses.
I did have some spending on high quality clips and other tools/toys to style it: sticks, forks, etc.
If I keep my impulse to get a new pretty under control, I spend less than $5 a month on my hair.
I don't pay for cuts or trims.
I don't use heat tools and burn electricity.
MisaLady 11-08-2008, 08:24 AM Well, it's not SUPER long, but it is somewhat long... my hair is below bra-strap length but not yet tailbone length.
Mine is now between my bra and my butt.
DD trims it for me. She also does any color that I want. I am going to let it grow as long as I can.
I used to have hair to my knees. But cut it when I got pregnant the first time. Over the years I have let it get to my butt several times.
kittykatstrong 11-08-2008, 02:30 PM My hair is about brastrap length. I had a pair of scissors to it yesterday but I have spent so long growing it out I couldnt do it.
HandyMom 11-09-2008, 01:36 AM I keep my hair at about 12" long all around. Took forever to grow out the feathered bangs so I'm not looking to cut my hair anytime soon although it does get hot on the back of my neck sometimes. I wear it up at night to keep from pulling on it. It is wavy unless I blow dry it, then it lays straight.
Jason 11-29-2008, 01:54 AM I'd like to have my hair alot longer than it currently is (shoulder length)... but my hair grows so f@cking slowly.
For example... it's taken three months to get my beard ~1" long.
My hair is currently shoulder length... and it's taken just over a year to get to that point!
The biggest issues I have with my hair are threefold:
1.) it's naturally greasy... I could shower 4 times a day... and it'd still look like I hadn't washed it in a week or more! (unless I use conditioner... see below)
2.) if I use conditioner on my hair... it completely strips all of the natural oil from my hair... this causes my hair to become completely unmanageable as I have very fine hair.... the slightest wind will make my hair look like a birds nest in short order.
and
3.) I have *bad* dandruff
Because of this I'm constantly having to decide between taking care of my hair/dandruff... or having birds nest hair all day. *Sigh*.
As a guy... I really don't care what 'style' my hair is in... or what it looks like... but I do like to keep my hair out of my face (impossible if I've used conditioner in my hair)... and I don't like having my clothes look like they've been snowed on.
Yet another front in the battle to stay sane...

Palooka 11-29-2008, 02:19 AM Jason, have you ever tried tea tree oil and also what kind of shampoo and conditioner are you using? It can make all the difference.
Paul Mitchel tea tree shampoo would be good or Nexxus Biotin shampoo. Or have you ever been to a dematoligist? Sometimes diet can help a lot or even sun light.
Jason 11-29-2008, 02:55 AM Jason, have you ever tried tea tree oil
No... I've never even heard of 'tea tree oil'.
and also what kind of shampoo and conditioner are you using? It can make all the difference.
It depends... what day is it?
LOL...
I've used just about everything over the years... from Head&Shoulders to Suave... to Aussie... and everything in between. I'm currently using a mix of about 30 different shampoos and conditioners (mostly samples) thrown into a single bottle.
Though I also use a specialized dandruff shampoo about once a month, called 'Nizoral' (heavily mentholated too ;-) ).
Paul Mitchel tea tree shampoo would be good or Nexxus Biotin shampoo.
Never heard of either... are they expensive?
Or have you ever been to a dematoligist? Sometimes diet can help a lot or even sun light.
Yep... they actually recommended the 'Nizoral' (or Neutrogena T-Gel... which, btw, is the nastiest crap on the planet)... or, better yet... soak my head in a vat of hand lotion for a couple of hours a night (my first thought was... 'And I'm supposed to pay for this.... how??').
Much as I love the menthol smell of the Nizoral shampoo... it's just too expensive to buy seeing as it does not work....
On the other hand... I'd really hate to give it up... because the menthol allows me to breathe when I use it (really bad sinus issues). *Sigh*

Oh that Neutrogena T gel is gross. I could be wrong but is tar one of the main ingredients in some of those products?
There is lots of other products with tea tree that may work and just google. It smells really good too.
ladykemma2 11-29-2008, 08:49 AM i have bra strap length hair.
it had been down to my buttcrack... hair gets into inconvenient places. :hubba: During the "Year of the Divorce" i cut it severely back, i was grieving and neglected it. I let the great clips hairdesser cut it back to her judgement.
i have really pretty sterling and brass hairsticks. that the only reason i don't hack it off is i won't be able to use my hairsticks.
i plan to go naturally gray. I clean my scalp with "conditoner only" suave aloe and water lily. On the third day i use shampoo (white rain energizing citrus) or i get conditioner buildup.
i used to have really bad dandruff but going conditioner only, it stopped.
i have a majorly greasy scalp. must wash everyday.
jason - don't use conditioner with protein - it will make hair tangly fuzzball.
latierra84 11-30-2008, 12:41 AM i have hair down to my waist and i cant cut. it would hurt. LOL.
i think its all because i was scarred in sixth grade. my mom took me to get a "hair cut" which resulted in about fifteen inches being cut off and it being so short that they actually had to shave some of the back because of the bob style. never again! I like to say.. I was born with long hair, I will die with long hair. LOL.
dh is like, "you are on the computer and laughing again"....
Mavourneen 11-30-2008, 08:51 PM If you say you have hair that won't grow past a certain length...do you wash it every day? If you want long hair, you have to get out of that habit. Some hair does not do well with daily cleansing. Surfectants take too much natural oil out of it , it becomes brittle, and breaks easily.
1. Wash hair every other day at them most.
2. Use good quality conditioner every time.
3. Use a detangler spray and a wide tooth comb to comb it after shampooing.
4. Let air dry at least 1x per week ( that's usually my Saturday or Sunday wash )
5. Use deep conditioners and leave in conditioners on the middle sections and ends.
My hair is now between my bra strap and behind after I started following these rules a few years ago, and I love it.
