View Full Version : Aldi's questions
mea772 09-18-2007, 10:13 PM Are there items in there that you buy (off brand) that taste just as good as the name brands?
Are there any items that you have tried and they are not as good (ie: as the name brands, not as fresh, etc)?
If I am buying chicken wings that is where I get mine...they are the meatiest that I have ever found! I have also bought a few other things there but am always weary about trying some of the generic brands there.
jettsmom 09-18-2007, 10:22 PM I buy most everything there.
I do not like the chicken noodle or tomato soups.
We also don't care for their chunky sirloin burger soup. It's not as good as the real stuff, but will eat it if I can't get Chunky cheaper.
I don't buy their milk either. I don't drink it, but dh said it was watery.
I like the cream of mushroom and chicken soups better than name brand. And the ravioli is better than chef boyardee, IMO.
nodmicks 09-18-2007, 10:40 PM The only thing I've tried and not liked so far is the tuna. Yuck!
Marie78 09-18-2007, 10:45 PM I like their baking products (flour, oil, choc. chips, vanilla extract, and sugar). I like their instant pudding and generic fruit and grain bars. I like their oatmeals and veggies in a can. I like their soap and tp.
The only thing I didn't like was the brownie mix that I bought. It just wasn't as good as the name brand mixes
YankeeMom 09-18-2007, 10:50 PM I like their baking products too. Also the neufatchel cream cheese. My kids like the mac & cheese (velveeta type) and the spaghettios w/ meatballs. The bread is good, just be sure to give it a squeeze. Sometimes it's not as fresh as it could be. Oh and the Nutella (chocolate hazelnut spread), my kids love that stuff. They have a "Duo" kind that has white/brown nutella. That's their favorite.
cdmom 09-18-2007, 11:07 PM The only thing I've tried and not liked so far is the tuna. Yuck!
Someone else on here said the same thing so I've never bought it. I have bought about everything else and liked it all except their pizza. Ds said they taste like cardboard.
mea772 09-18-2007, 11:24 PM Thanks for all the replies!
I definately know where I will be getting all my baking stuff, that's for sure LOL
I am looking forward to going there on Friday. I am looking at this "saving money" thing as a game! I cannot wait to see how much I can save!
I am also maybe going to Super Kmart but I don't see an online ad for their groceries. A lot of times they have fantastic dollar deals, etc. My mom is going to try to mail me her ad when she gets it tomorrow...hope it gets to me on time!
firstlove 09-20-2007, 02:26 PM Most everything is as good or better than the name brand products-the only thing that we've found we don't like is the spagetti sauce.
mea772 09-21-2007, 07:49 PM Phew! I saw that today and thought about buying it LOL
she who can not cook 09-22-2007, 05:18 PM over here we are all trying for healthier eating TESCO thru out the year has reduced five fruit and veg a week ... so adli are doing the same so when ever i go there, there's something half price last week it was cucumber and celery
pepper1 09-27-2007, 12:44 PM I like their baking products (flour, oil, choc. chips, vanilla extract, and sugar). I like their instant pudding and generic fruit and grain bars. I like their oatmeals and veggies in a can. I like their soap and tp.
The only thing I didn't like was the brownie mix that I bought. It just wasn't as good as the name brand mixes
About the brownie mix I thinks that funny because dh prefers Aldi's brownie mix to all the others!LOL
jettsmom 09-27-2007, 07:24 PM We like the brownie mix too. We also like the pizzas. Ds always asks when I'm going to buy more.
I'm just careful with the fresh veggies. Sometimes they look good on top but when you get home and open it up, it's spoiled on the bottom.
I don't buy bread there much, unless I'm going to be having grilled cheese or toast a lot.
I don't like the spaghetti sauce either.
The chips are okay. I usually by the Save brand at the store or walmart's brand.
But the can goods are the best. I came home with a trunk load a few weeks ago.
I like many of the Aldis items. What I am careful about, is the fresh produce. Just doesn't seem to stay as fresh for long. I also don't like the large frozen tubes of ground beef. The couple times I bought them, there seemed to be little pieces of something (bone?) in them. The pound size tubes have been OK. My husband doesn't like the peanut butter, either. But, all in all, I love Aldis and can save a LOT of money by shopping there regularily.
Alice Chalmers 10-08-2007, 10:15 PM Of the products I've tried I only disliked the peanut butter (but it was fine for cookies) and tuna fish (thrilled the stray cats, though). Some products I've not tried at all--for example they only have bleached flour and I prefer unbleached. But all their dairy, baking supplies, cereals, frozen and canned veggies, and beverages have been quite good.
shoiji 10-24-2007, 11:16 AM I used to go when I had only a few bucks to get food. Some of the stuff was not tasty but when you are hungry you tend to ignore that. I bought some cat food there but it definately did not agree with my cat. Poor thing was in distress and yelling her head off.
When I had my car on a couple of occasions I took people there that only had a couple of bucks for food and they were really greatful walking out of the store with their bags of food.
kcsmom76 10-25-2007, 12:35 AM We just tried some of there pasta mix, like Suddenly Salad, and it was the same thing. I could not tell a difference.
My dh eats peanut butter like crazy, he loves Aldi's and I love the price.
We also like there frozen pizzas, veggies, baked goods, cereals, milk, cheese, hamburger meat in packs.
The bread tastes good, if you can find a fresh loaf. The last few times I have bought some it felt fresh, but didn't taste fresh, so I buy that at the regular grocery store.
HTH.
bake893 10-31-2007, 10:28 AM My kids prefer the salsa and spaghetti sauce and tortilla chips
mander 10-31-2007, 01:37 PM I have like everything I have tried so far from Aldi.
i.m.cheap 10-31-2007, 10:05 PM We like their milk, and the spagetti sauce. Brownie mix is good, as are the bagels and cream cheese, white corn tortilla chips, chocolate chips, olive oil, pancake mix and syrup.
I do NOT like their ground coffee in the can. BLEH! The produce has disappointed on several occasions. I will buy the baby carrots, but not much produce at ALDI any more.
Oh yeah, the Nutella-like spread is AWESOME!
Alice Chalmers 11-01-2007, 11:06 AM Is any ground coffee in a can worth drinking? :lol
JennaJLC 11-04-2007, 08:24 AM We like just about everything there. I hardly go anywhere else for baking supplies or canned goods - you just can't beat the price, and the quality is the same.
We love the Fit + Active line. Wheat Thins (the equivalent) for 99c a box, dried fruit to munch on, yogurts, granola bars, frozen convenience foods (I just tried their pizza stuffed sandwiches and they were great! Soft on the outside, unlike Hot Pockets), etc.
My mom shops there too, and my siblings won't eat any other spaghetti sauce but Aldi's, LOL. They like how thick it is (I find that it's TOO thick and I always thin it out). But lately I've been able to stock up on Ragu for cheaper than the 99c Aldi price, so that's my first choice.
I do not like their egg noodles - they fall apart into little pieces when cooked.
I definitely inspect my fresh produce from here - it isn't always the freshest.
I found their 12-grain loaves of bread this week for 10c a loaf! It's good, hearty bread. I grabbed 5 loaves.
JustJoy 11-04-2007, 10:14 AM Most of Aldi's products are General Mills...just in different packaging :)
MikeandMattsMom 11-04-2007, 04:28 PM I like pretty much everything they have. We are not picky so its all good! The only thing i dont care for is their cheese slices. Yuck! They have other brands to choose usually i buy one of those.
TheRootedNomad 11-05-2007, 07:58 AM I do NOT like their ground coffee in the can. BLEH! The produce has disappointed on several occasions. I will buy the baby carrots, but not much produce at ALDI any more.
Oh yeah, the Nutella-like spread is AWESOME!
I don't buy produce or coffee there ever anymore. I whole heartedly agree with Deb.....BLEH!!!. The produce always tastes like it's been frozen and thawed multiple times.
I stock up on:
mandrine oranges
applesauce
light syrup
rice mixes
crackers
sweetened condensed milk
ketchup
cream cheese
choclate chips (unless I can get my hands on Gheralldi really cheap these are my favorite)
stuffing mix
mashed potatoes
tomatoe paste (if I haven't found better deals at are scratch and dent)
We really like and will occassionally buy thier
frozen cream puffs
french toast sticks
round colby cheese
Other than the coffee and produce though, when I go todomy "stock up" run and we need it I'll try it there and have never had an issue.
Squirt 11-06-2007, 05:00 PM I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention on my first trip-- I picked up a few items with MSG in them: turkey gravy and instant mashed potatoes.
I'm going to be more careful this week!
I just bought some of the fit and active organic vanilla soy milk today...it is wonderful! I've never been a big soy milk fan, but am thinking of cutting down on cows milk, so thought I'd give it a try. Glad I did!
