View Full Version : How Much Do You Spend On Gas For Your Vehicle A Month?
staceyy 10-20-2007, 08:55 PM I'm a non-driver and dh a long distance truck driver is rarely home to drive his car, so we don't spend much on gas for the car each month. He usually fills up once a month for less than $40. We get 10 cents off a gallon of gas for every $50 we spend at the local grocery store. Our last receipt shows we'll get 40 cents off on our next fill up at the gas pump. I'm curious as to how much the rest of you spend on gas per month and if you have any tips to share with others to lower the cost of gasoline.
Jaded 10-20-2007, 09:54 PM I drive back and forth to work every day, and try not to take unnecessary trips. I use about $20 a week, or about $80 a month.
I used to be able to fill up on that, but now I get just a tad over a half tank every week, and I don't go much of anywhere non-essential.
Kitten20 10-20-2007, 09:57 PM I spend around $30 every 2 weeks -- work transport only. Boyf spends about $20 every week, but drives a lot more than I do. He also has a car that gets much better MPG than mine.
dcompton 10-20-2007, 10:03 PM About $40-50 a month. Wish I lived closer to work.
Momof4cats 10-20-2007, 10:07 PM About $350 a month, depending on the price of gas, of course.
redhead68 10-20-2007, 10:35 PM About $120 per month, which amounts to about three tanks of gas.
sdrjeolsen 10-20-2007, 11:16 PM We spend 400-600/mo. But we live in the middle of nowhere, one of the prices to pay for that. I've tried to talk dh into driving into town (20 mi/there & back) and taking the bus into work, but so far no luck, he'd rather drive the whole way. Me on the other had, I have been known not to leave home for 3 weeks straight.
IntlMom 10-20-2007, 11:18 PM We spend about 80.00 a month. We are really careful to not drive too much.
AheeK 10-20-2007, 11:20 PM About $250 per month.
YankeeMom 10-20-2007, 11:32 PM We get about 20 gallons every other week. That's with driving the kids back & forth to school as well as dh driving it to work a couple of days a week and me driving it to school a couple of days a week. We have the same gas deal here too, 10c off per $50 spent at the grocery store (up to 20 gallons) - but I haven't been spending at the grocery store so I have no cents off right now :( And of course gas has shot up over $3/gallon.
Dh puts $20 worth in his truck about once every 3 weeks. I drive it to school a couple of days a week and he drives it to work a couple of times a week.
Luv2BeFrugal 10-21-2007, 02:04 AM Dh and I fill up every other week (not a full tank) usually about $23-$25 each time... So, between the two of us it's about $100/month. We don't do unnecessary driving...work, school, groceries, Church.
Neeley 10-21-2007, 02:44 AM My truck and DH's car get filled up about once a week. Normally a fill-up runs around $60 for my truck and $30 for his car. These days we are spending around $360 a month on car gas.
DH drives to work everyday, drops and picks the kids up from their homeschool classes, takes DS to football practice three days a week. Plus DD has volleyball practice once a week, games twice a week, DS has a football game once a week and it is out of town more often than not, drop off and pick up the kids from church on Wednesdays, then all of the running around we do for this or that. I also take my dog for a car ride about once a day to get us both out of the house.
Lambie 10-21-2007, 10:22 AM We spend form 80.00-120.00 depending on how much we need to go across town to the rentals we have. We do live close to everything for the most part yahoooo!!! Katy
Marie78 10-21-2007, 11:51 AM I drive to work and back, the bank and shopping once a week, and my mom's once a week, which is a 2 hour drive round trip. I spend around $80 a month and most weeks I don't even fill the tank to full.
frugalfarmwife 10-21-2007, 12:25 PM I try to keep my usage way down, if I don't work I only go to town 1x a week. Mine is usually $30-$40 a month and I drive a fuel sucking crew cab dually.
Now hubby on the other hand, sigh, he drives almost an hour to work, so he goes through $300-$350 a month easily. And then there's the fuel for the tractors, ugh.
Usually it's about $500 or more a month for us. :(
kj
Its_Donna 10-21-2007, 12:45 PM It takes approx. 300.00 a month for DH truck and 120-150.00 a month for my car (DS uses it too)...now that DH is gone :sigh: I'm down to just car fuel so we will be saving while DH is OTR.
JerryG 10-21-2007, 12:50 PM within a block of my bank, a bakery, a hardware store and grocery store. I only live 10 miles from work. So I fill up every other week. About 50 dollars a month in gas now. But I used to have a job with a long commute to my jobsites and was filling up every other day. Yeah, that sucked. I consolidate trips and will try to get stuff done on the way home or to work. There are five grocery stores within 5 miles from me, so I can consolidate those trips when I'm stock piling.
Amanda W 10-21-2007, 01:58 PM DH commutes 60 miles each way to work, so he spends about $180 a month. I have a Jeep that I use to run errands, etc., and I fill up every other week at $50 a pop. So about $280 a month right now.
HisDaisy 10-21-2007, 04:26 PM We spend $200-300 on gas per month. My Dh is a sports reporter for the local paper, so driving is a must for him. We fill up our main car 1-3 times a week and our second car once a month. We live less then 1/2 mile from my Dh's office so he usually walks to work. However, he drives different sporting events in the evening some of which are 30 to 90 miles away. The gas and mile add up fast. The up side is that his work place gives him a mile allowance and that usual adds up to $200-250 a month.
nodmicks 10-21-2007, 05:04 PM At least 280.
peanut 10-21-2007, 06:31 PM About $60cdn/mth. DH takes the car to work every day in winter and fall. Sometimes, in good weather, he bikes. I try to car pool with people places.
ScrapMama 10-21-2007, 08:08 PM I spend about $200 a month, and that's filling my SUV up about once a week.
LexTysMommy 10-21-2007, 08:23 PM I work from home but still pick up kids from school take to sporting things twice a week, grocery once a week. I would say $20 a week. I have SUV so I dont get very good gas milege. Good thing I dont drive much. SO $80 a month tops!
missyali 10-21-2007, 11:20 PM I am at about 200 a month (40 mile round trip t0 work daily). DH's varies as to work sites. We probably average together about 550. *cringes*
banana 10-22-2007, 09:12 AM I get both cars filled up every 2 weeks. I usually spend $30 per car per fillup. So approximately $120 a month for gas.
baxjul 10-22-2007, 09:40 AM Dh drives a company truck, so they pay for gas. We only use our truck for errands and shopping, all within 5miles from home. So, we usually spend around $40/month for gas.
mom22grls 10-22-2007, 09:48 AM My van, DD16's car, DH's van, 1 employee van, 2 big work trucks & 2 tractors run us about $2000 a month. Yes, $2000.
I fill up once every 2 weeks or so about $65. DD fills up weekly about $25.
Katybird 10-22-2007, 09:58 AM I spend between $75 and $100 dollars per month. DH spends at least double that but he makes more trips to town than I do. It is 50 miles round trip to work for both of us.
Jayne 10-22-2007, 10:40 AM for my van about 80.00 a month..dh has a company truck and his gas os paid for by them, thank the Lord!!
mommynurse 10-22-2007, 10:45 AM I didn't realize how much money I was spending on gas until I read what everyone wrote and I actually stopped to think. Right now it's costing almost $160/month (that doesn't include DH's trucks). DD#1 is doing marching band, both DDs dance 25 minutes from home on different days and I work approx 15 miles from home, so I'm doing lots of driving right now. Band season will be over soon, so hopefully I'll be able to cut back- WAY BACK :)
DAAC3DEC 10-22-2007, 10:51 AM ok, wow this is depressing--i spend about $120 and hubbie about $200--:loop:that's...........$320!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we both have about a half an hour commute to work and he goes to the farm every weekend that is about 3 counties away....i only drive when i have to, cause i hate to drive...i am depressed!!!! :pdoff:
mom2bobsarah 10-22-2007, 11:34 AM I fill up once a week at about $35 and DH fills up twice a week at $40 so our monthly is about $460 my DH works about an hour away and I drive my son to school 3 days a week and it is about 20 miles each way, I have a doctor appointment every week that is an hour away, and then there are the errands (which I try to do on my son's school days). The scary thing is that I am in NJ and we have cheaper gas than any other state and we still spend a ton of money on gas. I have a mini-van and DH has a small SUV so it is not even like we both have Hummers or anything. You have to wonder where it all goes?
Edna_E 10-22-2007, 06:38 PM I usually spend about $25 on gas for my in-town expenses - but I live very close to where I work, and don't do a lot of extra running around. Lately, I've been doing a lot of driving to my mom's town, which has sometimes exceeded $200 in a month. I don't know how to even try to budget for medical crises like that.
mikandmari 10-23-2007, 09:23 PM I use very little gas... 3 trips per week to my job just 3 miles from home. But my husband changes job sites, he's anywhere from 5 to 150 miles from home. When his commute is far he will sometimes spend $500+ per month just on gas. It's a nightmare, and even worse is my ability to budget for it because it varies so much.
It's very expensive over here: $ 9 a gallon.
When I fill up my car I pay 70 Euro's/ $ 100 and that lasts me about a month. I recently started to use the bus more often to get to work + for smaller distances I use my bike.
90 to 120 sounds about right for me. I could do better but sometimes I have to drive to the next town just to buy craft supplies. Our craft store burned down and they arent going to reopen.
Dh spends 0 his company pays for all his gas otherwise we would be talking in the hundred. He puts about 100 a week into this work truck.
Missourimom 10-24-2007, 10:41 AM We drive trucks and one has two tanks. They both require fill ups weekly and are necessary for my husbands home improvement business. I usually spend $40.00 weekly and he spends $75.00 weekly. So between $460.00 and $500.00 monthly.
tlenad 10-24-2007, 10:58 AM I'm running at between $75 and $85 every two weeks (I get paid every two weeks). So between $150 and $170 a month on a short month. I've tried to cut down on driving but it is so hard as I have to go to work 5 days a week plus school 2 nights a week.
Mamaof2rugrats 10-24-2007, 01:00 PM About 150.- every month. Some months more.
Jessesbride 10-26-2007, 02:45 PM We usually spend about $110 for the both of us on our vehicles every 2 weeks... so about $220/month... however, we just moved (which we used our E.F. to do... TRUST ME SOOOO WORTH IT) & now I have a "small job with my church doing childcare 2 days a week while my son is in school... It's only about a 15 minute walk from our house so I will be just walking and saving gas. On good days, my hubby is excited b/c he can now (safely) bike to work, whereas before it was not safe for him to do so. So we should be seeing a drop in our gas mileage...
However, while we are closer to everything, his family ALL live about 30-40 mins away from us and we still see them frequently...But, now they come see us more, b/c we are not sooooooo far away...:tay: we try to make sure that we (my bro & sis n law esp) take turns hanging at eachother's house that way it's not an unfair burden on anyone... b/s... we are all doing the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace class at their church, so we are always trying to find low cost/cheaper ways to hang out together! :cheer4:

frugalnana 10-26-2007, 05:02 PM Dh works out of town so he drives about 40 minutes each week and spends about $120. Its about that much for our other car also since our kids live in different towns about 20 minutes to each kid.
I just got a part-time job for the holiday season so it may go up some for me.
Libby 10-26-2007, 10:10 PM One tank will last me on average a week to week and a half, depending on how 'social' I am and where I choose to 'visit' or 'shop'.
If its just to and from work a tank would last me for a month! (if not more?)
One tank for me on average is $60-$65 from almost bone dry to stuffed tank.
chatterweb 10-27-2007, 04:10 AM Together, we spend 120.00 per month. Which is why I try to work less and stay home with PTO!:tom:
momof42003 10-27-2007, 06:18 AM I just filled my tank and it cost 53.00, and to fill DH Vette it costs about the same (he has to get super--not sure why), and Oregon has some of the highest gas prices in the nation.. So we only try to fill up every other week on pay days.. So we could spend any where from 160.00 to 250.00 a month on gas...
Royal 10-27-2007, 07:37 AM For my car we spend about 50 euros per month. I work about 10km from home. My DH spends about 250 euros on gas for his car. We do however get gas money from his work. We get at least 150 euro from his work and if he has appointments/meetings for work he get gas money refunded as well. So I guess it's not that bad!
mmy2grls 10-27-2007, 10:42 AM I spend about 70 a month in gas. I work from home but I take my daughter back and forth from school.
PplAmanda 10-27-2007, 02:30 PM We have budgeted $690 a month for gas. My husband works 50 miles away, so he drive 100 miles at least 4 days a week. At the moment he is working some overtime and driving an extra 2 days. I work about 20 miles from home and work 5 days a week. By the time we take care of our business in town, drive to church and back, we have easily spent most of the gas budget.
lullaby80 10-27-2007, 02:34 PM About $60/month for my car and the same (or less?) for DH's. We both drive compact cars, his gas goes towards commuting a very short trip but he has to buy supreme so it adds up. My gas usage is mostly useless, meaning I "need" to get out of the house every afternoon and usually end up driving to a store etc. I could go with just driving 15miles per week but oh well..
Grayce 10-27-2007, 04:39 PM I spend about $60 a month. I commute with my car but it is fairly cheap because it gets such good mileage. It cost about $15 to fill up and for that I can go about 250 miles.
Squirt 11-06-2007, 08:09 AM I spend at least $120 a month. My truck only gets 12mpg when it comes to the stop-and-go drive to work.
powerfm1 11-06-2007, 09:19 AM I am disabled so have to drive a Jeep Cherokee (hips). I drive my aunt to the doctor when necessary, myself to the doctor and errands.
I live in a town where everything is pretty close, so I only spend about $45.00 every month and a half. It would be more but my aunt has me use her grocery gas discount card which usually saves me about $13.00 per fill up.
dianne9106 11-07-2007, 07:20 PM a hybrid that gets nearly 500 miles to the tank and a gas guzzler that we are afraid to let go to empty :yikes: I do not work, but because everything is sooo spread out where we live and shop, I sometimes drive 400 miles a week!! That includes making visits to my Mom in assisted living that is 18 miles one way. My husband works 4 miles from our home one way, but usally comes home for lunch. He saves money for food, but not for the gas it takes to drive home. I filled his truck up yesterday that was on 1/2 tank and it cost $45 - I was trying to beat the price increase :fight: I would give anything to live close to DH work, shopping (within walking distance) and my son's school. We bought a hybrid because I was driving so much and I knew his truck was doing a number on the environment all own it's own!
pammy 11-08-2007, 01:00 PM We fill up dh's truck about once a month, $60, and fill up mine about once a month, about $35. So under $100 a month. I'm saving to buy a bike so I can cut mine down even more. :)
