Notice how gas prices are going up and up? Oil could pass 100 dollars a barrel this month. Supply is beginning to drop, for reasons having to do as much with geology as with politics, and this is going to have a major effect on how we allocate our time and money over the next few years.

I've been visiting a number of Peak Oil related websites and forums, but most of them seem concerned more with debating over whose fault it is and whether civilization will collapse into ruin next week or will it wait a year or two. While I expect a lot of economic upheaval on our way to a sustainable energy supply, I don't think that Zombie Apocalypse is a likely scenario. I really think that the choices frugal people make and teach to others will make a tremendous difference.

Anybody else here also in both the Frugal Mommy community and the Post Carbon community?

I've been taking the time to educate myself more on the subject lately, in an effort to better understand what is going on in the world, how we came to such a crisis, and what if anything we can do about it.

I saw the documentary "Peak Oil" at the Cleveland Film Festival this summer, with my youngest son.

The way the movie took us through the progressive incorporation of petroleum into our everyday lives pointed out how ridiculous we've been in product development and energy use.

I've always been fairly environmentally conscious, but this movie laid it all out. My and I wound up having a very serious discussion about whether he should have children biologically. Adoption has always been on the table for him and for his fiance because of social concerns, but this movie really stunned us and he brought the discussion home with him that night.

They're pretty much leaning toward adoption. Fine with me. I don't care how I get a grandchild, or what age, just give me a kid!

We need to renovate the way we live.

Thinking, yes. It's hard to feel like there is much that I can do as an individual, however. I am already a "good citizen" regarding environmental concerns - it seems like the things that will make a big difference all require major organizations to either invest in (companies) or legislate (government) major changes. Meanwhile, I try to keep myself flexible about what I think "works" in my life.
