Just want to share how "putting out the word" got me a good car :)

I have some good friends who are uber spendthrifts. I love them to death but we have very different financial philosophies. When they helped me move she found my washed out baggy stash and begged me to let her throw them away. Apparently she has been quietly hating them for years. :)

Having said that, they recently bought a house, which they immediately began to remodel via credit card. Shortly after this started I began to hear one half of the partenership start grummbling about their paid off 96 tercel with less than 89,000 miles and how a truck would be much better. Since I have known them for years I knew the tercel would be moving on shortly so I just mentioned that I might be interested if they every got rid of it.

Well this weekend I bought it for $1,000 dollars... which is well below blue book. She drove it less than 5,000 miles a year and they just put a new clutch in. I expected them to ask for more so when they said $1,000 dollars I didn't try and bargin, I just said "I'll take it!" Woo Hoo!! My first car in 7 years and it should last me some time since I will only be using it on the weekends (they charge $100 a month to park at my work... no way! I'll take the bus)

They did buy a truck... which I am happy to report they bought second hand from a private party and paid off immediately. I think I'm rubbing off on them. I do notice they have become much more interested in tightwadding since they bought the house... she may start washing out baggies soon :)

Denise, I hope I'm rubbing off on them. I really worry about them. I know how much they make and I keep re-calculating their debt in my head. If one thing goes wrong they are going to be in a world of hurt and probably loose the house. I really hope they "convert" but not wait until after its too late.

It's very hard to watch people you care about dig themselves such a huge hole :(

Sounds like you got a really great deal! This car should last you a long time.

I'm still buzzing over the deal I got on my 2001 Subaru Outback a few months ago. I was looking to replace my 1991 Subaru, but I wsn't in a hurry. I kept an eye out in the paper and this car was advertised for $4600 with 109k on it. The people sold it cheap because the factory paint job has "spiderwebbing" cracking all over it. You can only see it if you look close. It may also need some other minor work eventually.

Book value on this car is around $8000+, I had done my homework and knew what I was getting. I bought it immediately. Payed cash of course, actually, they took a personal check! I plan on driving it for the next 10 years.

Always nice to get a good deal on a car

My dad and brother work for a collission shop and they got me a very nice mini van that was damaged in an accident and they fixed it perfect for me. I will never buy a new car.
