View Full Version : Getting my wad tight!
yonksgirl 12-11-2007, 10:40 PM I started to read the TWG!!!! I love it! At first I thought it would take forever, but it is a quick read. I have the complete guide so it is over 900 pages long but in one day I am done about 100 pages! My hubby says I am reading the phone book! LOL!
I love how it is written!
acidcookie 12-12-2007, 12:01 AM I love love this book and have read the entire 900 page tome. I skipped most of the mortgage, house-y kind of stuff since it's not relevant to me, but I love reading the readers' tips the most.
Nantahala 12-12-2007, 07:49 AM I love this book, and even though it's so long it reads fast and you can always go back to the articles that strike your interest.
miss_thrifty 12-12-2007, 09:19 AM me too i've bben going over mine since last week. trying to remnind myself of thingsi still could be doing.
3hungryboys 12-12-2007, 09:37 AM I get mine from the library. I have read Vol 1 and 3, and last night I started Vol 2. I wish they had the complete guide, but I have really enjoyed reading these. Such great ideas. And I love how she breaks everything down!
nodmicks 12-12-2007, 10:12 AM I really like the recipes! My volumes are very old and sure look well used!
PrairieRose 12-12-2007, 10:28 AM I have all 3 and usually re-read them at the first of every year.
kaykwilts 12-12-2007, 10:31 AM I have the first book and then I subscribed to her newsletter and got all those until she stopped writing them. I have all those newsletters in a binder.
toile 12-12-2007, 11:46 AM I LOVE how this post said getting my wad tight!
I have the TWG is every form too :)
I miss the annual Christmas letter that she retired.
In the 3 volumes, I went through and made marker pages for my favorite article like the TW Fridge, pantry items, recipes.... things like that.
I sort of miss the days when I was TWG obcessed.
Our income grew over the years, and thats a blessing for sure.
But there is something very sweet about having a lower income and racking up savings still ya know?:bigsnow:
yonksgirl 12-12-2007, 12:40 PM I may not do everything in the book but there sure are some good tips in there. My hubby makes decent money, our problem (besides him being off for 6 months ;) ) is that we have no idea where is money was going, and we spent on stuff we did not need. THe book inspires me to live more simply!
Momof4cats 12-12-2007, 01:09 PM I have all 3 and usually re-read them at the first of every year.
I *love* it! Never thought about doing that. That will be my New Years resolution. Except I'm missing volume 2. Need to scrounge up another copy.
mikandmari 12-12-2007, 02:47 PM I LOVE this book! I like the way it is written in little articles. I ordered the complete one from Amazon last year, I decided it was book I wanted to own, not borrow. It is still in my book basket in the living room, it's never been put away!
jennybethg 12-12-2007, 02:48 PM I have all 3 and usually re-read them at the first of every year.
Good idea!
happydog 12-12-2007, 04:55 PM I love the TWG too! I first read it about 6 years ago, when we decided to go to one income and homeschool. I finally bought my own copy from Amazon's used book z-shops, after reading the library copies a couple of times. I think I paid less than a dollar each, plus a couple of buck shipping.
Some of the actual budget numbers are outdated now--prices have gone up so much--but the basic principles are just the best guide for making do. And, it's so much better for the planet and environment to reuse and recycle things for new uses. Mostly, I think what I took away from it, was how much of a difference planning makes in sticking to a budget. I learned so much from those books, and I still read them whenever I need a boost to get back on track.
pammy 12-12-2007, 05:32 PM One of my favorite frugal books. I've read the complete probably 3 times now, and bet I could still learn something if I read it again. I felt the info was worth the cost so I bought the book. Has paid for itself many, many times over. I love being able to refer to it if I'm wondering about something. LOVE IT.
kittykatstrong 12-12-2007, 10:42 PM I love reading the book(I have the 3 in 1). It helps me stay frugal. I like that she explains things. Does not just tell you to do things but will explain why she is doing it that way. Because your situation might be diff.
Marie78 12-12-2007, 10:45 PM I got the book for Christmas last year and it was my favorite present in 2006I have referred back to it so many times this year for tips and ideas and advice :).
LadyNada 12-13-2007, 09:36 PM I agree, the TWG is probably my favorite read. And I can pick it up at any time and start reading and get all kinds of wonderful and NEW information!
Daisygirl 12-14-2007, 06:29 AM These books influenced me more than anything I have ever read. I first read them 12 years ago, or so, when Chloe was little. Back then, things were so tight that scrimping was essential to merely survive.
I reread them often, anytime I feel like I am getting spend-thrifty, I pick them up and it feels like Amy is my mom, dispensing common sense.
They will always be front-and-centre on my bookcase!
LadyNada 12-14-2007, 07:05 AM I wish so much that she'd start it up again, or even just post an update or something. She could do so much via the Internet. I hope everything is good for her. The kids must be grown and gone by now, or at least the oldest two, wouldn't you think?
Izzy0906 12-14-2007, 11:52 AM Where can I get the TWG?
yonksgirl 12-14-2007, 12:06 PM Where can I get the TWG?
I had my library order it in from another library. I will be buying my own copy next month! I love it!
toile 12-14-2007, 12:56 PM Overstock.com used to have the best price on The Complete TWG.
I buy 5 at a time from there sometimes, for wedding gifts etc..
I have a Aldi question but it wont fit under this TWG thread hhmmm
Going to look for a place to post it :)
AmyBoz 12-14-2007, 02:27 PM The Tightwad Gazette was the first book on living frugally that I ever read and I LOVED it! I sold my copy a few years ago...wish I hadn't done that!
happydog 12-14-2007, 06:38 PM If you want to buy them, I'd really recommend checking out Amazon's used books. I bought them--literally-- for a penny each, plus about $2 in shipping. The books looked brand new when I got them. I don't think they had ever been opened. You can even get the hardcover edition of the Complete TWG, for less than $10.
zenmama 12-30-2007, 11:46 AM I'm completely new to this Tightwad Gazette. Anywhere I can sample some of this on the internet?? Our local library only carries books in french, so that's not an option. It seems very helpful, everyone is raving about it!!
erstbrmom 12-30-2007, 07:02 PM I"ve been reading and re-reading Amy's books since they first came into print years ago. I pull them out when I want to get back into a more frugal mindset.
TayJar 01-15-2008, 12:14 PM Wasn't there someone on this board who had all of the newsletters saved as pdfs or word docs and could send them via email? Am I making this up?
Jessesbride 01-15-2008, 07:08 PM I think I did see that someone had kept the newsletters & emails & such... also have you thought of the book swaps? I know there are some around tho I have yet to personally get started on one... figured I might want to read most of mine that I've been wanting to get around to in the last few years! lol.. but you can check & see if maybe the book swaps that are free except for mailing (postage, etc) might have it in their lists & such... Amazon has it for about $14.59 on up... I would just google it and see what comes up!:smirk:

wulong32 01-15-2008, 07:27 PM It is still in my book basket in the living room, it's never been put away!
Me too! I bought the complete twg a few months ago, and it has yet to be put on the shelf
Momof4cats 01-16-2008, 05:34 PM I'm completely new to this Tightwad Gazette. Anywhere I can sample some of this on the internet?? Our local library only carries books in french, so that's not an option. It seems very helpful, everyone is raving about it!!
I went to amazon and found one of the books (don't use the Complete, it has to be a numbered one). It will give you excerpts from the book you can look at. http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0679750789/ref=sib_dp_pt/104-8105955-0940705#reader-link
shortcake 01-16-2008, 06:17 PM I actually heard so much about these books that I ordered them all. I didn't know that the complete one was all three books together so I bought them all. I will keep the complete one and sell #1, #2 shortly on ebay. Do you think I should post them as a group or seperate items???
I love these books they are a must have!!!
Mamaof2rugrats 01-16-2008, 06:59 PM I love the TWG books but have always felt they should have been better organized.
POOTERSMOMMY 01-24-2008, 12:13 PM TWG can be bought at most book stores as well as at Amazon. Half-Priced Books has them here. Bought the 3 in 1 for SIL last Christmas
This was the first money saving book I had read. I love love love it. I have all 3, and refer to them monthly. They are so worn and highlighted. Amy gives you the motivation to get started at a frugal lifestyle. You don't have to like all of her ideas, but she gives you a great starting place.
\I would recommend these books to ANYONE. She funny, she interesting, and she's nobodys fool. Think about it - frugality has made her life very comfortable now. We could all take lessons !!!!:yeah:
