http://www.cccsatl.org/ nonprofit consumer credit counseling services—this is the one you want, supported by government grants. Never go to a “credit counseling service” that charges you money. These folks can help you learn how to budget, can help you consolidate debts, and get creditors off your back.

http://svdpusa.org/ The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul provides all sorts of emergency and ongoing services for people in need of financial assistance. They can provide clothing, furniture, food, and help with bills and getting employment. This is a Roman Catholic organization.

Also, I know in my state, residents who find themselves in dire financial straits can contact their township trustee, for the area where they live, and receive small onetime grants or loans to help them get through a bad patch. I'd do a search for your local government to search for local assistance programs like this.

I hope some of these links can help someone having tough times.
