View Full Version : OMG! DH's job is done!
baxjul 01-02-2008, 12:13 PM He works for a commercial electric company, that works on commercial building. The workers were told today, that there is no work for them after this week. They are not being laid off, just told not to come in!!!! That means NO income!!! I'm so upset. He has already applied for several jobs over the past few weeks, and has some leads, but down here it seems like everything is in slow motion! We have no emergency fund (kicking myself right now). I need some big time encouragement!!!!
Daisygirl 01-02-2008, 12:16 PM Oh no, Julie! How stressful this must be!
I hope some of those leads pan out quickly! You will be in my thoughts - good luck!
I'm so sorry, how can I help?
Nantahala 01-02-2008, 12:29 PM Julie, I am so sorry, how horrible. :( I will pray for y'all.
yonksgirl 01-02-2008, 12:31 PM I was in your boat last year when my hubby's company shut down. Things will get better just hang in there! :hugz:
MrsMcDowell 01-02-2008, 12:38 PM I am so sorry Julie. Can he file for unemployment?
Is there anyway I can help?
Kitten20 01-02-2008, 12:46 PM :hugz: I am so sorry. I will keep you and your DH in my thoughts. He should be able to collect unemployment, but I don't know how long that takes to kick in. :( I hope that your DH will be able to find a new job soon. Hang in there and let us know if there is anything we can do to help!! Anything!
3-boys-4-me 01-02-2008, 12:56 PM I too will be praying and thinking of your family during this very difficult time. I hope new work comes his way soon. Keep us updated and stay strong.
dolphin 01-02-2008, 01:06 PM Julie, I'm so sorry! I know you and hubby are freaking out right now. We are in the same boat here with dh losing his job and not being able to find similar in the Electrical field. He found some part time work but it's not looking good as a job with a future.
Go online to employment insurance in your state. Read the FAQ's and then apply. It can't hurt. All they can do is turn him down and atleast you would know. If he is off this week, make sure you do it by Saturday so you have the 1st waiting week in. You can also do it by phone.
Many prayers and 'courage' being sent your way.
shoiji 01-02-2008, 01:27 PM YUCK! Sorry to hear about your circumstances. Luckily your husband has already been looking and has some leads. Stay strong. Will be thinking about you.

Laurie in Bradenton 01-02-2008, 06:55 PM Julie,
There is a new Cracker Barrel going up on US 19 andMarine Parkway in Newport Richey. We bid the project but didn't get it . There is alot of electical work on one of these and I'll bet the electical contractor on the job could use another good guy. Might be worth it for your DH to take a ride down there and see. The job broke ground few weeks ago and takes almost 6 monthes to finish. The general on the job is a great one to work for. I've done alot of jobs for them in the past. I know its alittle bit of a drive for him but at least its work.
Good Luck
Laurie in Bradenton
auntie2many 01-02-2008, 07:14 PM Julie, prayers being said for your family.

cottageliving 01-02-2008, 09:59 PM Thank Goodness he at least has another week's work.
I'm hoping there will not be a gap between his jobs, but if so please have him apply for Unemployment as soon as he has had one week off -- this will be used as his 'waiting period' week. He will not receive unemployment for his 1st week off of work.
Then even if he works after that for 3 weeks then runs out of work again, his claim will have already been sent up and you will not miss any unemployment.
He can most likely apply online -- I did for unemployment in NY.
Keeping you all in my prayers.
baxjul 01-02-2008, 10:38 PM I just wanted to thank you for the well wishes. I've had a really rotten day, and it feels like the whole world is crashing down on me.
KJayEsq 01-02-2008, 11:29 PM I'm so sorry this is happening to you guys. I know a lot of homeowners are willing to pay tradesmen to do "side jobs" for cash (that's how I rewired my entire house). Maybe you guys can put the word out and that might bring in some cash.
Hang in there - everybody here is pulling for you! :apple:
emily_hope 01-02-2008, 11:52 PM Julie, I do hope things get better... and quick! I am glad to hear that he will be working for another week. Maybe that will pan out into something more. If there is anything I can do, don't hesitate to ask! (((HUGS)))
Drgnfly423 01-03-2008, 12:02 AM I'm so sorry this is happening to you all. I will be thinking of you. Good thoughts, good thoughts, good thoughts...

chatterweb 01-03-2008, 02:39 AM Hang in there!
Maybe post for an ad for work on Craigslist??
It is free...
larabelle 01-03-2008, 09:57 AM The same thing happened to me only a little more drastic. I was in the midst of showering and doing my hair one afternoon as I had to be at work at 4pm. I was working the 4pm to midnight shift. The door bell rang and it was the postman with a certified letter which required my signature. I signed and opened the letter and it was from my job stating that the company had officially closed. I was shocked. No job/no savings and we were to be paid at the end of the week. I did not recieve that pay check for years later.
1.) RUN TO THE BANK AND CASH THOSE CHECKS. IF THE COMPANY IS IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE AND YOU WAIT ON CASHING THE CHECKS THEN YOU MIGHT NOT GET A PENNY OF THAT MONEY.
2.) Apply, apply, apply to as many jobs as possible, as soon as possible. Go online (monster.com) and other websites and look for jobs as well as the newspapers/newsletters etc.
3.) TELL EVERYONE (neighbors, church members, association members) that your husband is looking for a job. Networking is the best way to get a job.
4.) Call your creditors and explain that you have lost your income to apply for deferrments. I am specifically speaking of student loans.
5.) Closely analyze and trim your budget.
6.) Pray-pray-pray and get others praying with you.
I am sending up a prayer for you!!! :apple:
baxjul 01-03-2008, 10:10 AM Thank you ladies!
The checks are okay, we deposited them yesterday. Luckily my daycare kids will be back next week, and I have a new one starting (part time), so that will help. I guess we've been through worse, and we wll make it. Thank you for all of the prayers, and good wishes.
I know it feels awful right now but remember this is not a layoff, as soon as some work comes in they will put him back to work. My guess is they will have something soon becuase I am sure the boss will be looking hard! And hay like me, it could always turn out for the better.
mom2bobsarah 01-03-2008, 10:28 AM Not sure how unemployment works in FL, but in NJ I know my aunt is able to file for unemployment when she is off for Christmas vacation and Easter. She works as an aide at a school but she is not salary so if she doesn't work she doesn't get paid. So she always files and at least receives a little something when she is out of work, even though it may only be a week or two. Also, please forgive me for being stupid, but if his employer said not to come in and he is not working, can't that be considered a temporary layoff?
Good luck and I am sorry about your situation, sending good thoughts and a prayer your way.
Missourimom 01-03-2008, 10:44 AM I'm so sorry your husband lost his job and with no notice too! Grrr. I hope he'll find something quick.
zenmama 01-03-2008, 11:26 AM :shake: Julie so sorry to hear that. Try not to panic though, as the rollercoaster of emotions can be draining. Sending lots of prayers to you!!
Laurie in Bradenton 01-05-2008, 05:53 PM Well Julie have your husband move over in that rubber laft. DH got a call from our major general contractor on friday and the 2 week job we were suppose to start on Monday was been scrubbed. We we're really looking forward to this job as it was our first large one since October.
Oh, well. More down time.
