View Full Version : This is the time I wish we had a wood burning stove
homesteadmamma 09-23-2002, 10:59 AM Oh man, its so cold here I had to turn on the furnace. How I wish we had a wood burning stove right now. Dh and I were talking about one yesterday.
I was going to purchase a cook stove but when I went to get it, it wasn't usuable and I just couldn't justify purchasing something I couldn't use of that size.
I think we will look into a wood burning stove though that we can put in the porch and have a fan blowing the heat in the house.
Anyone else have to turn on their heat or use wood to supplement your heat?
Mommy2Tyler 09-23-2002, 11:02 AM Not yet... but we're all bundled up this morning.
I dug and found Tyler some footed blanket PJs that are a little big and put them on him last night because I knew it was supposed to get cold over night. :)
I got my sweats on and had to go get my sweatshirt a minute ago.
Hello Fall!!! :D
homesteadmamma 09-23-2002, 11:22 AM Sherry here is another tip.
If I didn't have footed pj's, I would put on a pair of socks and then put on a pair of tights over that, then their pj's. I also made sure that they had a t-shirt of some sort under their pj's. If their little feet get cold, they tend to wake up miserable and wet!!!
I still do this with Michael and he is 12. He doesn't stay covered up and the other 2 do so I have to make sure he stays warm.
Mommy2Tyler 09-23-2002, 11:24 AM Good tip, CJ... thanks.
I need to get to Savers for some warm clothes and PJs for Tyler.
Patchworkgirl 09-23-2002, 11:44 AM I'm jealous- fall is my favorite time of the year and we are still having humid, sticky weather here. Ran the fan all night again last night. Just doesn't seem natural for this time of year. Picking out what to wear to work is a nightmare also- I'm sick of my summer clothes already.....lol.
mustang80 09-23-2002, 12:35 PM Still running the a/c here too. It is cool today though. Hopefully the heat is gone.
 I can't believe how cold it got suddenly. I am here in Ontario..actually northern Ontario and it is nippy here as well.
I haven't turned the heat on or used our wood supply yet. Many of my neighbors are burning wood already, actually they have been for a few weeks, as we have had some chilly nights.
With my dh away, we haven't built up our usual supplyof wood so I am really conserving our wood for the -40C temps. that we sometimes get.
We did our homeschool lessons bundled up in blankets on the floor, and finished up our morning lessons reading Little House In the Big Woods because it seemed so appropriate for such a nippy morning. LOL
My dks can't wait for snow!!!!:D yvonne
QuilterMom 09-23-2002, 02:28 PM Yvonne - I know you guys had so much fun reading Little House In The Big Woods. Can I come join you????? :)
I still have the a/c blasting here and it's impossible to go outside for 5 minutes without being drenched in sweat.
captclearance 09-23-2002, 02:41 PM I have a Franklin Wood Stone in the livingroom, I don't use it as much as I should, I love it !!It was here when we bought the house....We bought one of those long handled popcorn poppers and love to get into warm jammies and pop corn.... It's not cool enough yet.........
:D Sure Kim, we would love to have you join us. We were bundled up cozy and enjoyed taking turns reading as we sipped our hot cocoa.
I always find it so amazing to watch CNN, and hear about the vast difference in temperatures across North America. I will have to show my dks your post...they will be fascinated to read about the vast differences in temperature.
We are doing unit studies on weather at this time so your post will be very educational. LOL
You can always come for a visit if you get too hot down there. My dks would love to meet your son, and your newest family member.
If you start driving now, you can probably avoid the snow and bad driving conditions. LOL :smball: :smball: :smball: yvonne
QuilterMom 09-23-2002, 03:52 PM ROFL!!!! We are going to do a weather unit in the future (not sure exactly when) - let me know if you find any great resources/printables online.
Hot cocoa - yummy! I think I'm starting to sweat again! LOL!
P.S. I bought that book at a yard sale and I plan to read it to ds in the future. For right now we are going to start getting some of the My First Little House (I think that's the series) books from the library.
debbiepete 09-23-2002, 04:02 PM YMAY your so right. I have been reading on how some of you are turning the heat and and lighting wood stoves, as I sit here in my shorts and halter with the ac running on high. What a difference.
:D Hi debbiepete...shorts and a halter...oh I wish! I like snow for Christmas Eve and Christmas day, and then I have had enough of it.
I can't remember the last time I wore shorts and a halter. I wear shorts and a t-shirt usually, and if it is really hot I am in the water in a bathing suit. LOL
My dh and I often think we would like to retire to warmer climates. I love the change of seasons here in Ontario....but the cooler weather and snow adds much more work when you live in a rural setting.
Oh well...until I can retire I will just have to make the best of the weather, won't I? LOL
:D yvonne:D
dozymom 09-24-2002, 08:54 PM LOL another Canadian checking in, we have had wood stoves in some houses, and I grew up with them. I do miss having one in this house, can't even retrofit one, there is no fireplace.
It is so nice to dry the house out when its damp in spring and fall. We had a preserved wood basement in one house (never again!) and that wood stove made the basement liveable and dry.
My sis has wood heat. It's great. You can burn paper trash (not plastics though) which is another helpful feature if you do flylady's fling boogie, but live too far out for gbg pickup.
(bil takes a load to the dump on his way to work a couple of times a week cause it's on the way but burning makes life simpler)
dozymom 09-24-2002, 08:56 PM Forgot to add, it just feels good to the bones. When I go to the coast, it's cold in the winter, the damp just feels awful. But at my sister's place (she lives in Terrace BC, which is nearly on the coast) it is always warm and dry and cozy.
We have a pellet stove, which can burn either wood pellets, corn, or cherry pits. At the present time we burn corn. My husband has had the stove going a few nights just to take the chill off. This morning it was 32 outside. They are predicting possible flakes for the weekend. Yikes! I do enjoy the colder weather though.
yolo
mylittle4 09-25-2002, 12:54 PM i refuse to turn that heat on untill mid october, but we are all bundled up. It is 48 degrtees outside, but we live in one of those big old farmhouses where it's colder inside than it is outside. cant wait for the sun to come in the windows
