well i went to work yesterday and they informed me my job was being eliminated due to lack of work. i was starting to really make progress on our debt situation and now its back to square one. i cant help but feel defeated as im 55 years old and it wasnt easy getting this job i feel like i dont have the strength to go out there again the company basically used me to get thru the holiday season and if they had been upfront about it i would have felt alot better but they said it was a permenent position. allo the while knowing they had sold off half the business im really bummed about the fact i feel so used. any good wishes would really help me keep my chin up thanks everyone for listening

I'm sorry to hear that. Chin up. My FIL was laid off at 58 and was picked up quickly for work.

Why? Because he was experienced, proven track record and didn't have little ones at home that cause sick days for him.

You have a lot going for you, dont' get down. You'll find something quickly I hope.

Oh I'm so sorry. Listen though....I know several people, all in their 50's, who have either lost jobs or quit to move onto another company, and they have all come out, in the end, better off than they were before. Like the other poster said, you have experience, a lot of employers prefer to hire a mature employee because you're not as apt to use sick days, you're more apt to take your job seriously, and you're probably not going to leave and just use a current job as a stepping stone (No offense, I promise, to the younger readers here).

Good luck in finding something, it's out there...you just need to find it!!

I'm sorry to hear this Lora88.
I feel badly that you feel as you do.
I'm sure something else will come along.

I've been there where having to start all over feeling like it was nearly purposeless.

It'll come out in the end I'm sure.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya! :)

*hugs* I hope that your situation gets better very quickly! Hoping that the next door that opens will be a better place for you to be than the one you are just leaving. Just went through a similar situation in my own family, sending positive vibes your way:dust:

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Fortunately you have an explanation as to why you are in the job market. It isn't you, it is that the company sold half which eliminated your position.

Try to remain positive about the situation. Sending hugs your way.

Lora - So sorry you lost your job. I was 41 and still single when I walked into work one day and was told to go home. My employer laid us all off due to financial problems and closed the business. He knew things were bad but never let any of us know so we could prepare. I just started calling everyone I knew to let them know I was looking for work and found another job in 3 weeks.

I know it can be hard being older, but a lot of employers are looking for more mature workers. Young college graduates are great but you will bring experience with you and you can't beat that!

Stay positive. :hugz:

I agree that alot of employers are looking for stable mature workers who don't have the little children at home. You will get something and don't let this defeat you. Consider it an opportunity to find something you really like to do. You can do this, this situation can't be as tough as you are. Chin up and go get another job! Hugs and prayers sending your way.

So sorry to hear that :( I recently lost my job too so I can sympathize. The place where I am going to work just hired a co-worker of mine from my old job. She is in her mid 60s. Hang in there. It will work out for you, I know it. :hugz:

My mom is 50 yrs old, has been working at Wal-mart for 16 years, and she just got fired because she refused to step down from her position as Dept. manager. Talk about a place that is really going down hill. So many people from there that have been there along time got fired. My mom said that they are trying to get rid of all the old timers to bring in the newbies just because they would get paid less. It's sad.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I hope things work out for you. My mom is planning on going back to school for child care, she really wants to get her license to open her own daycare kind of thing. Every thought about doing something like that?
