i didnt get all the details but i guess that b/c someone didnt like that we are atheists they fired him. he was there for just about 2 months (would have been 2 months tomorrow). weve got some canned veggies, rice, pasta, flour, sugar, couple of chicken breasts and 3 pounds of hamburger meat. so we will be good for a couple of weeks. he will hopefully get his last check on thursday/friday. we have enough money to pay rent and maybe the vectren bill and some groceries. as soon as i can get my social security card from my mom after it arrives there then i will apply for food stamps. he started applying for jobs online last nite. im going to email my dad and stepmom tonite and see if they can send up a gift bank card so we can get more groceries.

Isn't that illegal?

Yes, it is against the First Ammendment. If you can prove that this was in fact why they fired him, I would seek council! I am so sorry that you will have this financial burden to deal with.

i think it is for hiring someone, im not for sure about after. he was on a probation period that would have ended in may.

ive always heard if you are still in your probation period, they can fire you for anything. still not fair tho.

thanx. jason's mom picked merrick and me up to last friday to sign a form giving our old dr permission to send my medical records to me so i can get merrick's birth certificate, then we went to one of the social security offices and i filed to get a new social security card (merrick's dad threw it out along with some of my other stuff and possibly merrick's stuff in anger last yr). so after i get my social security card we will head to xenia for food stamps, wic and whatever else. lol, last this morning when taking out the trash we knowticed our neighbor was throwing some stuff out and we found a printer/scanner combo and a small wood storage type thing. we dont know if the printer/scanner works yet. if it does then it will be easier for jase to print his resume out. i hope it works. if the scanner part dont work then thats fine b/c we already have one hooked up to this comp.

It is not legal in either the hiring or in the ongoing employment situation - however, I doubt that they would state that the reason for firing him is his religion (or lack thereof). If they do, however, you should talk to the authorities and think about filing a lawsuit - all of which does nothing to your immediate financial needs. Good luck to you, and I am sorry you are having to learn this ugly lesson about how things sometimes work - I hope you can keep from generalizing and thinging that everyplace works like that.

im sorry edna e but u r wrong.. here in nj sears got hit by a fine big time.. it involved sears not hiring some one because they couldnt work sat or it may have been sunday because it was their sabath...

from the minute a person is hired they are protected.. an employer can fire you because of an inability to do the job but not because of religonor lack of one.

I live in GA, which is a 'right to work' state. You can be fired at the whim of your employer, however in a case like this, your federal civil rights supersede the state's laws.

seriously--they said that?!?!? Wow. I'm surprised because that would seem to just automatically invite lawsuits, etc.

Hope things are looking up for you soon.

If you have an ID and know your ss number, you can maybe speed up the process by going to the social security office in dayton and reapplying. they will then give you a receipt which is proof you have applied. I know that the receipt is I9 approved for employment, and we are using one now as proof on a mortgage application until the actual card gets here, so I would assume the social services office would accept it too? Call first, of course, but i would think they would follow the same rules.
Hopefully that would help you speed it up a bit!

"but i guess that b/c someone didnt like that we are atheists they fired him."

This is discrimation. I think you should check
with you local Labor Department. If this is true
they could be in big trouble.
My best to you both.

Can you prove that this was the reason? I am wondering how they knew he was an atheist. I mean, if you wear a Jewish head-covering or a crucifix, it is pretty obvious. If you don't have religious symbols, because you don't have a religion, how would they know? Did he get into a debate with someone, or comment on someone else's display of their religion? I'm just curious. I've never heard of an atheist being fired. Most religions would keep him around in hopes of conversion. ;-) Either way, it isn't right to discriminate. Jobs should be gained and kept based on merit, in my opinion.
You may have a case, especially if it was a large company with policies in place.
I wish you well!

I'm sorry this happened. I thought we lived in America. You can't be discriminated against because you believe in God or you don't believe in God. You should look into this but do I could understand if dh does not want to work for someone so discriminatory. I wish you all the best.

when we went to dayton i did apply for another card and it should be at my mom's place in a couple of weeks. my medical records will be coming here in a couple of weeks also for merrick's birth certificate.

i think he got into a debate about it with his coworkers.

good news is that he might have a job with p.a.m (trucking company) after he takes the test for the cdl and a few other things for them after next month (training for 3 weeks). bad news is that we may have to postpone our housewarming/engagement party that was supposed to be on the 5th if he goes to indiana for training. his mom said that they will help me with getting bread, milk and cereal while he is gone. if he gets the job trucking then we will save up for a van and i will get my license to drive, start putting $10 from each check in the savings account we have for a emergency fund and maybe start a college fund for merrick with $10 out of each check into another savings account.

Good luck!

What was the "official" reason they gave for firing him?

Or are you just guessing it was for the lack of religion?

FrugalWitch
03-26-2008, 06:03 PM
It's not legal. However it is an extremely good reason to not discuss religion, or lack thereof, on the job. So sorry this happened to you.
