The technique you're describing on the bookmarks is called loom beading without a loom. I prefer it over loom work, even though it's more work and takes longer. I use that technique all the time!
I really like the heart motif on your bookmark, MH.
It's so true beads tend to multiply. I had a good supply, but on vacation last year I stumbled on a bead store going out of business. A lot of beads were fifty cents a tube, others were $2-3 a tube, pretty cheap for the quality. I spent about $300 and bought nearly all they had. I still regret not cleaning the place out!
