Wow! It's been awhile since I've blogged, I will try to do better with this.

I just wanted to make a quick note here about a few things that I've been giving alot of thought too lately.

1) I want to buy more cast iron cookware this year. I currently have 1~10 inch skillet, which I *love* but really want to add a few more pieces this year.

I am fed up with buying cookware that eventually warps or the non-stick coating wears off.

You can't beat cast iron. It will last literally for hundreds of years, if taken care of and really, what else can you think of nowadays that lasts hundreds of years, or, in the very least several lifetimes?

Not only that, but you can bake in it, use it on you're grill or of course, over a campfire.

2)Plastic. Ugh! I am slowly purging my kitchen of all things plastic related, except for my Tupperware.

I'm talking about those little 'reusable' bowls and lids, you know the ones that I'm talking about.
They are dirt cheap, but you can only store things in them, because you seriously couldn't cook in them *or* even reheat in the microwave because you get those little melty 'pock marks' inside.
You know what I'm talking about if you've ever owned them, and honestly I don't know anybody who hasn't owned some of them at one point in time.

I purged 90% of my plastic bowls & lids this weekend and rearranged my cabinets.

What am I replacing them with, you ask? Glass of course.
I have some of these:
Pyrex® Products – Making Cooking a Little Easier

They have the red ones at Wal-mart and the blue sets at K-mart.

If this is something you think you'd be interested in doing *or* even if you need some more storage containers, right now at Wal-mart, you can buy a very nice 'starter combination' set for $20.00.
It has a variety of different sizes and shapes with lids. I think normally they run around $22.00.
Here is a link to them on their website, although the sale price isn't posted~

Yes, while they do have a plastic type lid, the lids are made BPA free.
You can also bake in them without the lids, of course, "in a pre-heated oven" per the website instructions, if need be.

I do have some actual clear Pyrex "bake ware" though that I keep soley for baking purposes and I've always loved how they bake items.
Always evenly and as long as you put a little butter or cooking spray in them before adding the food, it's virtually non-stick.

So...more glass, less plastic.

(On a side note) There are two of us in my family who love drinking straws. I no longer buy the plastic drinking straws but have gone to glass straws as well.
Here is the set that I ordered:
Festive Four Custom Glass Drinking Straws by Glass Paradise

I ordered the 9" and they are perfect, even for the thicker type drinks we might drink such as milkshakes or smoothies.

And yes, you might of guessed it, they are dishwasher safe.

3)I am trying my hand at gardening this year using the "Square Foot gardening" method. If you haven't heard about it, just do a web search and you'll find plenty of info.

But this is the book that I would suggest if you find that it might be something you'd be interested in trying.

These youtube videos that I found also give you some different things to think about once you get started:

I'm starting very small this year, several different heirloom varieties of tomatoes & a few pepper plants.

I also bought 3 different herbs as well, cilantro, basil & parsley.
I will not plant these in the garden although alot of people do.
I want to do containers with these in hopes that I can keep them going all year long in my kitchen window, but we'll see how they do.

I will try to get some pics. of my gardening beds this week and get them posted soon.
I'll go into more detail in another post about how we did them 'on the cheap', thanks to all the great advice that I got in my thread, here:

Now I remember why I stopped blogging...boy am I long winded!!

Have a WONDERFUL week everyone!!
