fixer's food for thought

A journey through the growing season with some observations scattered about.

  1. Back to work

by , 05-31-2009 at 11:21 PM (fixer's food for thought)
Our vacation is over. We had a good time. We got a lot of things done. Some things did not get done but they will be finished soon enough. DW finished two cross stitch projects so she is happy. I am sitting here planning this week as I always do on Sunday evening. I should show you how I plan an entire week down to the hour, but if I did you would certainly think me mad as a hatter. It never goes like I plan, but I like having a road map. I will need to spend time with the garden. Some ...

  2. The culprit reveals itself

Early this morning, Dw came in from checking on the garden and told me I needed to kill something. It seems a crow was in with the peppers. He had found a small hole I did not notice. He ate the peppers and eggplant once again. By the time I got out there, he was gone. I am so happy I know what the problem is. I can fix the hole under the net. I can also shoot at them and scare them away. Crows are smart enough to know when it is time to go or at least spend less time here. We spent another ...

Today we went through our clothes to see what we could donate to Goodwill. We found more than I thought we would. It was things we just did not wear for any number of reasons. I had many sweaters that Dw gave me early in our relationship. She tried to turn a flannel guy into a sweater guy. Her fiendish plot failed miserably. I hope to get the clothes to the donation center sometime next week.

It seems the garden is safe for now. I hope it continues that way since we will not ...

  4. Something is eating my garden and THAT is eating at me

by , 05-26-2009 at 11:21 PM (fixer's food for thought)
It has been a busy vacation. We have been trying to protect our garden from an unknown assailant. It started with the beans. This also happened last year. We replanted and covered them with chicken wire. This morning I found that something had eaten all of our eggplant and pepper plants. I was beside myself. I have yet to be able to determine what animal I am dealing with. It made it through the electric fence. We with to town and spent thirty dollars on new plants. We surrounded them ...

  5. The fence is up

by , 05-20-2009 at 11:22 PM (fixer's food for thought)
Today I installed the electric fence around the garden. It was already too late for a pepper plant and an eggplant plant. The fence consists of a solar charger with three-quarters of an inch poly-tape. The charger is rated for thirty miles of fence so, with my garden, it packs quite the punch. It is grounded with three grounding rods. I used steel "T" posts at the corners and plastic tread-in post everywhere else. The fence now works for deer. Later, I will add two additional strands ...
