My mother called me around 1:30pm this afternoon in hysterics. Sushi (teenage kitten) her cat whom I named had to be put to sleep today because she had Lukemia (sp?). She was just about the sweetest cat you could ever have and brought so much joy into our lives. Now we are worried about the other two adult cats Langley and Miss Whiskers because it's contagious, so she is going to take them to the vet and have blood tests run. It hurts so bad because she was so young and she was only with us since Sept. of last year. I know some think it's silly to be so heartbroken over a cat, but I know that other's out there understand the pain, because they are more then pets, they are a part of the family. So when my mom feels it's right, I'm going to give her one of my daisy plants to plant in her yard in her memory.
When DH and I got our first apartment together we got a cat and named her Sunflower and we loved her because she was like a child to us and after she was spayed she developed an infection and had to be put to sleep. We hated to do it, but she was suffering and it was selfish of us to keep her that way. We stayed when it happened and held her as she took her last breath. We had her cremated and when we get to a place where we plan on living the rest of our lives we are going to bury her in a special place in the garden surrounded by sunflowers.
Okay, now I'm in hysterics and have to end this here.

I'm so terribly sorry to hear this. We have 12 cats (yes you read right). So much of our life involves them. Everyone has his/her own personality and memories associated with it. Each person in our house loves a different one. I always worry about a fire or natural disaster regarding our pets. I hope you caught it in time. so sorry.

I am so sorry to hear about this. No, it's not silly to hurt over the loss of a loved one, and all pets are just that. I do hope the other cats will be healthy. It's a scary thing.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear this! I would be hysterical if one of my kitties or dog had to be put down. Now, I worry about my duckies too. I am really sorry.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother's cat. I don't have cats, so I am asked to foster FLV positive cats on occasion, because they are so highly contagious to other cats. It is not necessarily a death sentence, however, Many cats have FLV and live normal lives. Your mom should have her other cats tested, though, and if they ARE positive, she will just need to keep them away from other cats, so they don't spread it.
