Garden 2010

April 19th 2010
Seeds are planted and some are growing inside. My daughter over watered some of them, so some will have to be replanted. Came up with a good idea to start seeds. Used the bottoms of soda bottles and poked drainage holes in the bottom of them with a thumb tack. Then I cut another bottle for it to sit in so I don't have water all over my counter. Works great. Today my order from Cottage Farms should arrive. This year I am getting strawberries, blueberries, a dwarf cherry tree and rosemary. Their prices were more than half what my local garden place wanted. I am growing basil, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, corn, watermelon, pumpkins, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, zucchini, peas, squash and whatever else I think of. We have a grape vine. It does not usually produce and if it does it is not edible. Hoping I can get all my fall needs to grow-pumpkins, corn etc... My neighbor across the street from me turned me on to gardening. His back yard is like fantasy island. He can grow anything. We have been composting for several years now and it really cuts down on the amount of garbage you have to haul to the curb. We even put things in compost in the winter. Last year we were able to grow 12 blue hubbards from just putting our old pumpkins in compost. That was exciting considering they want $8.00 or more for blue hubbards here in Jersey. The garden should be good this year. I will be posting pictures as things go along.
