The garden is done!

Posted 05-25-2009 at 10:46 AM by MomToTwoBoys

Well, for the most part anyways.

Over the weekend, I made a large dent into my gardening workload. I put in the lettuce and green onions in the side garden, plus all four herbs into the planters that are sitting on my front stairs. I have two 12" plants coming from MIL this week, so that leaves me with just some flowers to put in the front that have to come from somewheres else. I was going to put dill in the side garden because there's a considerable amount of space between...

Day Three - Planting the Bulbs!

Posted 05-12-2009 at 12:54 PM by MomToTwoBoys

The rain was looming overhead. I knew it was going to rain today but I figured it would have already started. I took the chance and decided to get out this morning and plant before it started to rain.

First, I decided to start my tomato seeds inside. I know I should have started them a month ago, but with the weather being weird and it seeming like Spring was a month behind, I thought today would be great to do it. Those are sitting in my windowsill as we speak, watered ever so slightly...

Day Two - Finishing the Garden Bed

Posted 05-12-2009 at 12:46 PM by MomToTwoBoys

So I decided to give the garden another shot yesterday, digging out the rest of the front border area and putting the finishing touches on the entire garden.

I went out at about 10am to start work because my allergies would have had a field day with me (I know, bad pun.) I took my garden border, measured the necessary width and then proceeded to dig up the grass to extend the garden outwards. It took me about half an hour, but I got it all dug out. I even found this huge rock in the...

Day One - Preparing The Garden Bed

Posted 05-11-2009 at 12:44 PM by MomToTwoBoys

We decided that we wanted to do two garden beds: one would be on the side of the house, the other would be in the front of the house. Perfect! Mother's Day comes and DH buys me a bunch of lovely things to get started. <3 DH!

We get home from our day out yesterday and I start digging. First, I measured the length of the front bed. I left about three feet on each end, then measured two feet segments with a ruler and used the old border as placemarkers. I started to dig a trench to...

Our gardening journey is just beginning...

Posted 05-04-2009 at 07:38 PM by MomToTwoBoys

We decided we wanted a garden this year. Now that I have a water bath canner, I can do some canning and not let the produce go to waste.

Our first dilemma was trying to figure out what we wanted. I definitely wanted tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Alright then...

Next, we wanted them in a place that would be great for both sun exposure and space. I thought that the front yard would do well, but with the large pine tree in the middle of the yard it wouldn't get enough...
