OK, I'm gonna play dumb here for a second.. You mean like making a mix of example: 1 cup store bought, 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup borax, mix and add 2tbs to load????

All the DW soap here has gone up to or almost $4, way to much for me....

I also use the borax/baking soda mix. I'm alternating between this and using regular DW detergent to stretch what I have.

We have very hard water from our well with a lot of iron. The dishes were looking horrible. A friend told me about the product called LemmeShine. I can't do a load of dishes without it. I am thinking that it might be something to add to the home made dishwasher soap.

Default Settled for half the savings : )

I have tried every variation of homemade recipes for the dishwasher, and no matter what recipe I used, there was always a film on my dishes. But I have managed to cut my costs for detergent in half by using store bought detergent (cheap off brand), filling one reservoir half full, and a teaspoon of the homemade detergent in the other. Works PERFECTLY!

Are all of you with film on glasses using that Jet Dry agent in the dishwasher that is supposed to help the dishwasher with hard water?
I've found thats one thing you cant cut out to try and save money cause you'll loose it with etched dishes.

I used the borax and washing soda recipe...it worked fine for a bit, but then I started getting a film on the dishes...was also using vinegar for the rinse aid...I'm back to the finish tabs...I only use the dishwasher 2 times a week...so the 40 count lasts 20 weeks around here.

I am going to try the mixing method.. half store bought and half homemade. We use Finsh tabs right now and they are so much more expensive than I care to pay- especially at the rate that we run our dishwasher.

I still use vinegar in my rinse cycle and it works great but I have switched to the generic phosphate and chlorine free liquid detergent they have at Dollar General. It works much better for us and while not as cheap as homemade it is better than having to wipe everything down before we use it.

I fill one reservoir with vinegar and the other reservoir with water and 3/4 tablespoon baking soda with ONE drop of dish soap.

The smell of the commercial dishwashing soap causes me to have breathing problems.
