We tried Magicjack a few years ago. We had really fast dsl but the line was so staticky that we couldn't hear anything. We called the company and spoke with a rep. After trying everything suggested, it still wouldn't work properly so we returned it. They refunded our money quickly so I can't say anything at all bad about the company itself.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Google Voice - totally FREE to call in the US and Canada, and it is NOT VOIP - it is a phone-to-phone call.

On occasion you might have to try a few times to get through, but hey, it's FREE!!

Plus you get a free alternate phone number to use when you post classified ads or whatever, when you don't want to give out your home phone number.
