Temp Work
Has anyone ever done temp work? I am ready to quit my job, things have gotten crazy lately, now we have to sign out on a legal pad to go to the bathroom
. I have always had the health insurance for DH and I, but now he has a job with benefits and we can use his. I am just afraid to leave a secure position even though I can't stand it any more. Any advice would be welcome!

I did office temp work when I was younger. I loved it. I had a very short attention span and it was great because I would learn the job and then it would end and I would get to go learn something else.
I would recommend signing up for several temp agencies. You will be more apt to keep working steady.Beak-1996, Toad-1998, and Q-1998

I did it while we were in the process of going through our first adoption years ago. I needed to say when I had to be gone, not ask for permission. I loved it, I had a few short assingments, and a long term job that took me up till we left for Russia. I would recommend Manpower, that's who I temped for.
If you don;t need the benifits, but you'd like some flexibility, it's definitely the way to goLast edited by IntlMom; 05-31-2008 at 05:52 PM. Reason: add info

I joined a temp agency last year and my first assignment ended up being the only place I temped, they hired me on permanently after 4 months. I would definitely go through this temp agency again, it was First Choice and they had a lot of jobs that I could choose from. I just happened to choose the right one the first time

I have never used one but I think I would. I don't want to work full-time again so a temp agency would give me the choice to pick my jobs and work more when I want to.

Well I've temped for 2 years. My last assignment ended may 2 and i've not worked since. But then I only signed up with one temp agency and the time when my assigment ended was 1.) about the time college students start coming home and 2.) I worked for Volt and they've been doing some really goofy swithcing offices around etc. and it's not really clear what office i'm supposed to be working with. I did go sign up with another agency a week ago so far nothing.
I've gone back to serving on the weekends and right now i'm going to sell at flea markets for the summer and see how that goes. I may go back to temping in the fall when college students go back home.
DEFINETLY signup with more than one agency! I have a friend in Denver that temps now and then and always signs up with about 4- 5 agencies at at time.
While I was temping I met a temp with Manpower. She had been working for them for 4 years and had really positive things to say about them. Unfortunately Manpower doesn't work in my area.
I liked Volt until things got screwy. Also I've not had good Luck with Kelly Services. They tend to send people out regardless how their abilites match the job and then when things get screwed up they blame the employee.

I have temped at Kelly Services in the past. They always kept me busy. I worked at large corps, too.

My only issue with temping when I did it was that they would send me on jobs that I wasn't qualified to do or jobs that I said I didn't want to do (like reception work because I get too stressed out with many phone lines ringing at once). They would place me just to make the placement--they do work on commission, so it was more about making money than making me happy.
Other than that, I had tons of jobs whenever I wanted them, so it was good for that.

I heart temp agencies. Some of my assignments were long and some were short. I have experience in manufacturing so that's the jobs they sent me to. The only thing that is a pain is the application process with the agency. You fill out this looooooong application and take a bunch of tests and then wait until they look everything over. Expect to be there a while.

You have to sign out to pee????!!?!?!?
Holy Elvis Batman, talk about restrictive. Certainly sounds like you are seriously looking at other options and since you have insurance available via dh...I say go for it.
The ladies above me posted many good experiences with temping, and I personally have very limited, but good experiences. I like the flexibility of it and the biggest draw would be like a previous poster said, to Tell them when you are available instead of Asking them.

I have been temping since 2006, and I love it. I have worked in various levels of government offices, have had several long term (where they take you onto their payroll) and now that I am ready to settle in somewhere, not only do I have a great reference, I have a myriad of experiences, and have proven that I am adjustable and get along in a variety of environments. Plus, the whole job search thing is sooo much easier when someone else is at it for you, especailly since they are contacted for positions that are never advertised. I think temping is great, and while you may not get exactly what you're looking for in terms of hourly wage, you have a lot more say in what you do!!

Thanks for all the replies!!
They have not actually put the into effect yet, just talked about it. I am going to talk to two agencies this week, maybe three. I had an appointment with one today but had to cancel because I had to take DH's car to the shop (just loose battery connection
I talked to the other place on the phone, they said register online and call back tomorrow.

I started as a temp at one of the nations largest banks. Worked really hard, got hired as a permanent employee, kept working hard and have been there for 17 years now.
Once I got hired I qualified for their tuition reimbursement program and got a masters degee going half time at night while working. Half time for a 6 year degree is 12 years of going to school at night - took alot of dedication.

I just sat and punched the weights of boxes into a computer and read the newspaper the rest of the night.
