Calling out of work STINKS!!!
Ugh..here in Jersey we are getting 18 inches. Right now we have about 6. The visibility stinks. And DH's car...LOL, I don't even think it would make it to work. And I work about 25 minutes away.
So I called work. Talked to the manager. She was annoyed, you could tell. Well you can't even come in for a few hours?? I told her no, because in a few hours its suppose to get worse. We are suppose to get 18 inches by tonight! Gusty winds, and LOW visibility. She made me feel really crappy.
How are you suppose to deal with this??? I mean, she knows I worked for the company @ another store for a year. I never called out there. Only once with pink eye.

~I can't imagine too many people will be shopping in this snowstorm today. Her tone probably wasn't directed at you. She was probably just trying to figure out what to do. She has to know that even if you could get to work this morning there would be no way to get home until tomorrow morning.
As long as you're home though try to enjoy this beautiful day! We don't get them in SJ too often do we?~~Constance

Nope, not to often!!! I am enjoying it, but would enjoy making some money to!! She was poking and prodding to get me to come in like the snow really was not that bad.
I hate when they do that.

Last I heard,we were told to stay in unless absolutely necessary to go out. DH went out to the state highway(6 houses down) and it hadn't been cleared yet. He came back home. He has a P/U with 4 wheel drive. Not that we needed anything,it was just the "man" thing going on there.
It has been snowing here at least since 4:30AM. Forecast for it to contine until at least the same time Sunday AM.
I was a "relief" person at a small business at one point in time. I would always get called for 2nd shift on days like this. My answer was always "no". I'd tell them I lived in the country and the snowplow had either not come yet or had just plowed me in even more. All were truthful in part. Neighbor with a tractor would plow us out when needed.
I wouldn"t feel guilty. It is not worth risking your life for a few bucks.

I am with you. I HATE calling in sick. I have worked with my company for 7 years and have had the same boss for about 5. I don't do it very often, but I still dread making the call. I wouldn't take it personally; I am sure she was just irritated by the situation and she will forget all about it soon.
Enjoy your day off -- keep safe & warm!!

If the weather is bad, I am sure you aren't the only one to call in, or the first for that matter.
I remember working second shift at a nursing home when we got a really bad storm. No one could come in for third shift and none of us could leave until they came. So, we were basically stuck there until morning. The worst part was. I was days away from 18 so I couldn't work the third shift. I had to spend the night in the tv room.
Yesterday I went to the grocery store, it was packed. With the storm hitting here tomorrow, I am sure it will be twice as busy today... and YES, there will be the last minute "the weather man is never right" ones who are driving through blinding snow to get food on Sunday.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

Probably more than half the store got smart and called in sick. That would explain the pressure - SHE was dumb enough to go in...and is mad that she gets to do all the work as a result.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

She is probably just ticked that as manager she HAS to be there and is stuck there today. If it was me, I'd be tempted to close up and go home. She can't be getting many customers in that weather.

They just called and said if DH can drive me there they can have 'Sal' from food service take me home. UM, NO! I don't want some guy who I do not know driving me 25 minutes home. NO WAY. I don't know him!!! And I told them already DH cannot drive anywhere.
Ugh. I did not call them back.

Tell em you'll come in for double pay.

That's a job - not your life. She's doing her job as manager - trying to get any help she can. You're doing your job - protecting your life - simple to me.
Ashley - you are a very responsible person which is a wonderful thing. Your first responsibility is to yourself. Others wouldn't give it a second thought. Time to let it go. You have made your decision - and the right one it is - now enjoy being home!!
If need be, practice this "I wish I could help you out. There is just no way. Take care. Goodby."
Repeat as needed.Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

Enjoy your day off and don't feel bad.... Better that you take one day off than ending up in the hospital because you slid off the road and have to take a week off! Have fun!

I went in to work once in Rochester ny. It was a state of emergency. Took me three hours to get in to work. My manager put the pressure on me to come in. I would not do it again. I counted 85 trucks/cars in the bank on my way to work. When I got in I told him that what he convinced me to do was not safe and that there will not be a next time. Will be stayng home. I guess I was young and with no kids back then. I would never do it again. The drive was 25 mph the whole way

Ashley, chances are you will not be going into work tomorrow either. However, it is out of your control for now - your job is to enjoy today. Let's deal with tomorrow, tomorrow!!
