DJing Job
So DH has been unemployed for over 2 years now, he really wants to go back to work but ecuase of his heart condition he can't go back into the construction industry (not like there are many oportunities right now anyway) so he and I were talking the other night about options and we came up with the idea of DJing at parties. He downloaded some free software to his laptop today and he is really acting rather excited about the thought of being a DJ.
What do you guys think about the DH starting up a DJ business? Do you think that it would be something he could make a good living doing?Grocery Challenge $123.37/200

its not easy to break into at least in this area i would think unless he sticks to weddings - kids parties etc alot of the dj-ing jobs are not in areas that would promote heart healthy lifestyle late nights at clubs .
you need the $ up front to invest in good equiptment
not easy on family life as most work is at night weekends etc
may be best to look to work for a currant DJ who has more work then he can handle before actually looking to invest in own company
my oldest ds has afew friends that tried DJ one spent tons on equiptment and never really went anywhere with the business at least not enough to be a real reliable income.
other does it part time and has a FT job does a certain club once or twice a month in philly etc .
its hardly a sediment job you are sometimes carrying heavy equiptment - someplaces expet you to have your own main system setting it up expected to keep the place happy and moving - often have to deal with drunken fools - drunken woman trying to hit on DJ to make their drunken fools jealous- DJ around here are expected to act like they have the energy of 10 men rolled into the few hours they work . alot of running around yelling to people to get them riled up excited and dancing .
most djs i know had to give away quite a bit of free services to get noticed too - once people know and like you the paying gigs start coming in
i see it as a second job - i really dont see it as a primary job for most people at least not around here .
not to sound like a negative nellie - it looks like fun but i think theres alot of hard work out there
what type of heart issues does he have .*~Debbi~*

i would also look at what the competition would be like in your area - if not alot - may be a better scenario than what i see around us .
if you look and it seems like there is a good market
i would set investing limits etc and let him try it - but without expectations of it being the answer , guys and musical stuff whether instruments - djs etc they tend to want the best stuff $ can buy*~Debbi~*

DH has Hypertrophic Cardiomiopathy (an enlarged heart) basicly, stress, physical activity or anything else that gets his heart rate elevated too much is not good for him. His heart continues to grow larger, he has a pacemaker to help regulate his heart rate and a difibulator just incase the pacemaker can't regulate it or if it stops but there is no cure for it and other than the pacemaker/defibulator there isn't anything that can be done for it. So we were trying to think of something he could do that he would enjoy. He loves music and has plenty of sterio equipment and speakers although he says he would want to get a different amp and some sort of mobile case like thing to put the computer and amp in.

He would have to lug around the equipment himself, which would likely be a decent amount of exertion. As far as the actual DJing, how well does he read people? He's going to have to keep people on the dance floor, figuring out what makes them move. He'll have to handle requests, knowing what is appropriate or not.
Depending on the type of party, he'll have to learn how to transition between songs. This is less of an issue at wedding parties, than it is at a club event. Trainwrecking won't get you any repeat performances.
I've also heard that most people start out by giving away free gigs. However, this might fall into the "hobby that occasionally pays" category.
