Me too!
I gave my property management company to the Dh a few years ago when he quit his job. Now he runs the place and I help out when necessary. This has freed me up to do the things that I really enjoy and each makes a little income, which totals into a nice wage for me. Sure I could have a full time job somewhere doing the same thing over and over. But instead, I have multiple 'side' jobs (jewelry sold in local boutique, farmers market booth selling my crafts & baked goods, mystery shopping, survey taker (I have done this for over 6 yrs, so now when I take surveys they are for hundreds of dollars a pop), grocery store worker (working one scheduled day a week and on call as backup the rest of the time, filling in for sick people, vacations, etc), odd jobs for people (there is not much that I won't try at least once anyway)...
Like Savvy says ~ I have my free time - I make my own schedules and I would never go back to working for anyone else and letting them call the shots on me. Sure you have to have discipline and not be heavily in debt. You have to be able to live below your means and watch your money. But you can't put a price on your personal freedom ....I am not making a killing- I am simply making a living... and for me, this is just right.

Honestly, I am so sick of supervisors pushing me to do jobs I'm not interested in - does that make sense??? My current supervisor is pushing me towards an office manager. I DO NOT want the stress and no one seems to get that. My sister ran pizza shops her whole life. At 46 she was dx with a rare deadly cancer. Her whole life she worked her ass off was stressed to the max figuring she'd retire early and enjoy life. She was dead at 48. I turn 48 next Monday. I have it in my head that cancer thrives on stress. I carry the health insurance for my family as DH is self employed. I earn decent money and have family health plan, but coworkers are always pushing me for me to advance. As much as I'd like even more $$ I don't want the STRESS. I don't know if it's psychological from her death or what. I figure I'm living comfortably, have everything I've ever wanted and get to spend time with my family. I TOTALLY understand your working a few part time jobs and calling your own shots!! LOVE IT. Don't understand why more people don't get it!!! I currently work 37 hrs. week. That's enough for me.
KatieGrace - I know what you're going thru. I have a BIL in his 50's who's a computer programmer. He's been out of work for a few years and actually had to move back in with the Inlaws. He applies for anything out there and still nothing. Stores & Fast Food just say he's too qualified. What's a person to do. Places have to realize that nowadays people just need to earn a living. It's understandable why so many people are depressed who wouldn't be. You can tell he's humiliated living back with his parents. They love it cuz he helps them, but he'd rather be working.

I see that his link will take you to a company called BestMark. It is one of the companies that I currently do my mystery shopping. (And if you follow any of my posts - you know I LOVE mystery shopping)... Don't be afraid to sign up with them. They are legit, have good job offers and they pay really quickly. (Just stay out of MY neighborhood - lol)... Good Luck!

Some of the more enjoyable jobs I have had in the past started with me offering to volunteer at the business, and learning while I worked. I worked two-four hours per week, so it didn't impact my ability to look for "real" work, and it put me in a fantastic position to both learn the business and to be the obvious choice when paying jobs became available. Most federal gov't agencies have a volunteer program, and from there, you can jump off into a variety of different jobs, since most federal agencies have a need for clerical, admin, and technical employees. I got a friend a volunteer job as a librarian's assistant at the Bureau of Land Management, and he went from there to a part-time office job, to a full-time administration job.
An acquaintance of mine just got a job as an assistant chef at a vegan restaurant because she asked if she could volunteer one day a week and help with prep work. They accepted the free help, and then (fortuitously for her) got busy enough that they needed to hire more kitchen staff.DH aka Mad Hen

My suggestion:
Take the retail or fast food job for 6 months unless you have had recent cashier experience. Work on your 10-key with a typing tutor program from Best Buy, around $20 and know your way around a Windows computer okay. Then go apply at banks for teller jobs. These start at $10-12, offer benefits, sit-down work, 40+ hours, a lot of job security and tons of opportunity to advance in a variety of positions. These usually work around a school schedule. Need excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

Craigslist has HUGE section of jobs. NEVER FILL OUT ANY CREDIT APP OR GIVE SS#, DOB OR D/L # BEFORE AN INTERVIEW. SOME OF THESE ADS ARE FAKE. THIS IS CHOCK FULL OF PART-TIME WORK THAT WOULD MAKE OKAY 2ND JOB.

My husband used to work at the Walmart Distribution Center. I don't know if this is a take anything job, because they can be picky on who they hire but they do have busy seasons. It was manual labor, but what people don't think of is that they do have smaller, easier jobs! For instance, they have a position called "Break Pack" and that is just standing on a conveyor belt and breaking up small boxes of items into packs to go to the stores (so like maybe a 12 pack of toothbrushes would be broken up into two packs to go to two different stores). Its easy, just gotta be on your feet. And he started at $13/hour and by the time he left was making $20/hour. They give good raises with cost of living increases and he had great benefits.

First, I need to say that I'm a college professor and CPA. I've hired many employees when I was self-employed and in management positions. What I look for in an employee are the skills necessary to perform the job. I've hired everything from custodians to PhD professors to attorneys. A good resume is key for any job. Your resume should focus on your skills. If you are a SAHM your skills might include time management, organization, good communication skills, and budgeting skills. If you have the time, go to the local community college and see if they have a free career center. They might offer tests to assess your skill set and tips for landing a job. There will be job postings as well. If something really interests you, you might want to take one course that gives you an edge for that type of job. Education has a very high return on investment but only if the education is in employable fields.
I'm having a hard time trying to find someone who will work a few hours a week at my home doing light gardening and cleaning. I'm offering $15 an hour but it would only be a few hours one day a week.Kim

CPA-Kim, did you try posting on the gig section of Craigslist? I have always had good luck finding people to do small or odd jobs for me on there.
