Default Help! Asking the boss for a raise....

I've never had to do this before and am a little bit anxious.

Tomorrow I am going in to see the lab manager (since I don't really have a supervisor right now) to ask for a raise. I recently found out that some brand new people at work, with no experience, are getting paid more than me. For example, there is a woman with no more education than me who was hired to do the lowest grade job in the lab. I am a higher grade than her, and in addition, I ALSO do her job (which is not in my job description) just to help keep the work flow decent. I am a team leader and have been for 4 years, I have the most seniority (in my area- more than my supervisors and manager) with the hospital, and 6 years of experience in my particular job. I am one of the on-call problem people, and I can do any job in my department (including supervisory stuff) w/ the exception of the courier position, and that is only because I haven't done it before, but I am sure I could if push came to shove. Anyway, my point is I have all this experience and background, and she is brand new. She gave her notice last week that she was leaving because she was offered taining to do the "main" part of my job (not all the extras I do) at another hospital. So, they offered to train her and pay her $2 an hour more than I make. I am happy for HER, but of course I am not happy that I train these people, answer all their questions for them, etc, and they (yes, they- other new people are also getting paid more than me) are making more money than me.

So, any tips? Oh, and sorry for blabbering on and on.

I'd write a list of why I thought I should get a raise. Write down everythig you can think of. Then edit it down to the main reasons. Type up your list with your main reasons at the top and all other reasons below. Learn this list. Practise how you will present yourself and talk aloud. Do this until you feel confident about your presentation. Then, when you go to your interview .... smile, know your own worth and be firm.

    Good luck, Kimberly

Rhonda as usual has spoken wise words. You have every right to be appreciated with a paycheck that is in keeping with all you do.
    Good luck!

Your post states exactly why you deserve the raise.. However, do NOT, NOT, NOT use the example of how your co-worker makes more money than you do. That is a HUGE no no to know how much your coworkers make.. If you mention that.. Not only will you not get the raise.. They may be ticked at you afterwards..

Just list out everything you do, how much experience you have.. what you do above and beyond your normal job duties, that type of thing... Also, have an idea in mind of how much of a raise you want..
