So my interview for tomorrow...
...will be rescheduled. We're in for a big storm--at least 8" of snow, maybe up to 15" I am disappointed, but not much one can do when living in New England!

Well the interview won't be happening any more. I got a very rude email from her about how her entire staff (all of 6 people, including her) were able to make it in before 8:00...why wasn't I able to make it in by 9:00.

Here is the email:
Michelle,
Thanks for your call and email. Please note that, despite the weather, our entire staff made it to the office today before 8:00 a.m. Can you please tell me why you were unable to make it here for 9:00 a.m., and whether this would indicate you'd have trouble getting to work when it snows? The interview would be pretty difficult to reschedule, and before we do so, I'd like to address that issue. Thanks!
I could understand her concern regarding that issue if we only had a few inches of snow. We're forecasted to get between 7" and 15". 256 towns in Mass. cancelled school today, including our town. I had no one to watch the kids anyway, but I also wouldn't have risked my life to drive in the ice to make it to the interview.

Did you email her back and explain that due to school being cancelled that you didn't have anyone to watch the girls? Obviously you don't have a job yet so don't have day care for them. I get the feeling that she thinks you should leave 2 young children alone in a snow storm to go to an interview not only hazarding your life but theirs as well?????
Poop on that company Chelle, you can do much better and with someone that isn't so corporate/goal orientated and more family orientated. Just going to take a bit of looking is all.
Good luck to you and

You're right Dee. It just seems like the perfect job.
Here is my reply to that rude email:
Anne,
Normally it wouldn’t be an issue for me to get there in the snow, but when I emailed you yesterday, the weathermen were forecasting a really bad storm, and I really thought everyone would have trouble getting to wherever they need to be. School was cancelled for my children, and if I were already working for you, I would have dropped them off at day care and gone to work. However, I am just returning to the work force, so they aren’t in any care right now, and there was no one to watch them today.
The interview rescheduling is unnecessary as I am no longer looking forward to working for MassNear.
and her reply (sounds like she's back pedalling or happy to have gotten rid of me):
Michelle,
That all makes sense, which is why I asked. Sorry you're no longer interested, and best wishes with everything!

oh Chelle, I'm with Dee, I think no matter how good they sounded at first, her attitude shows you how that company operates and it's one of those wonderful in hind sight near misses that happens.
Thank goodness you didn't go, and get suckered into a job with someone of that type of how shall I politely term it????
ummmmmm veiled hostility in her reactions.
normal people might think to wonder a bit about your ability to get in, but they would keep that for the interview, and not rush to conclusions ahead of time.
dh worked for a boss like that who jumped to conclusions. He decided even before dh was transferred that dh had been responsible for a mess on a job site that dh had never even worked at let alone been involved with.
On his first day with the boss dh attempted to clear it up by proving that it was another guy, and that dh hadn't been there at all only to be told, NEVER MIND! I made up my mind about YOU already!.
That started 10 of the worst years of dh's life at the company. Transfers were shut down due to cost saving that year and we were stuck for 10 years with this man.
Dh's blood pressure soared from normal to very high needing medication, he ended up with sleep apnea needing a CPAP machine at night and his cholesterol went thru the roof and he got severely depressed. He went really grey, and his health in general nose dived not to mention his confidence. Sterling performance record before and after this boss, but nearly fired several times, suspended with out pay for no reason and other nastiness during that decade.
When we finally got the long awaited transfer out, dh's health improved a lot, but he is still not the same as he was back then and not all due to being older either.
I am glad you wrote her with a thanks but no thanks. She sounds eerily like that nasty boss of dh's.
You are WELL OUT OF THAT ONE!!!!!
The job you get will be much better!!!!

I agree, and I'm sorry to hear of the troubles your dh had

Life is too short to work for a company that will make you miserable...especially when working full time means spending most of your life at the job.
At any rate, I applied for a temporary (at least I *think* it's temporary; their ad was a little unclear) job working for Barnes & Noble's bookstore at UMASS (2.7 miles away from my house).
I wrote that I am available to work M-F 9-1. I know I wouldn't make enough to put the kids in day care, so these are Mother's hours.

You are so right Margery, I too worked for a boss from He** and my health went so far downhill it wasn't even funny. I'm sorry to say this as I fully believe in women's lib, but female bosses are the pits in general. Of course you can get a good one that is understanding of life's little curves, but my experience has been they are climbing the corporate ladder and don't care who they step on in the process.
That job sounds perfect Chelle! Hope they answer you soon with a reply for an interview. *crossing my fingers here*~~ Dee ~~

Actually, reading that email reminded me of a really interesting sitatuation I had at work a few years ago - the famous end of March Blizzard in 2001 (in MA - I'm sure you remember it Michelle! Not the April Fools blizzard, the one the year or so afterwards). The company I worked for had one customer that would come out and do a one week "product developement" visit once a year. They are based out of San Francisco. Their plane was delayed landing in Boston, and the next day when EVERYONE in the company stayed home (there was 3 feet of snow on the ground!) they actually DROVE out from Boston to Worcester, and had the nerve to wonder where we all were and why we didn't make it in (Hello, three feet of snow?)
Anyway, I agree that you're right on passing - anyone that would even question your judgement like that is someone I wouldn't want to work for. Good luck with the interview/job at Barnes and Noble!Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06)

That's unbelievable Sara...I think that people from areas w/o snow expect that we go about our business even in blizzards because we're so used to the snow

So I have an interview w/Barnes & Noble tomorrow. It's 3 weeks long (to help them with their rush--students returning to school), and I asked the woman if my mother's hours were a problem. She said that they were perfect because they have students to work at night but need people to work in the mornings.
The only bad thing is that it's minimum wage. I have to suck it up and just do it...even though I made that much money in 1986 (no exaggeration there).
Now I just have to get the job...

Good luck with the new interview!
I think it was divine intervention with that narrow miss at the other job. Thank goodness you found out how that woman was before taking the job. For some reason, I keep picturing the boss (Jolie Fisher) from Desperate Housewives....
