Default i may have a job...

and wasn't even looking for one. i have been substitute teaching this past week at my son's school, just to get out of the house while my husband sleeps days. the principle asked me out of the blue how many years of college i had. i told her 5, but my degree was in criminal justice. she said it didn't matter, i could apply for a teachers aid and make much more money that way. they were going to submit it at next months meeting and if a job comes open then i'll be considered. i know that one pre-k aid is leaving at the end of this year, and pre-k is where i would really want to be placed. maybe all those years of college weren't a waste after all.

Sounds like a good move! You might also want to find out whether OK has a plan whereby a person can work as a teacher while completing their requirements for a teaching certificate if they already have a bachelors degree. Many states are doing this to enable already degreed and working people to change into teaching without having to quit their job to go back to school. Some have coursework that can be completed on-line, some at night/weekends/summers, so that the new teachers honestly CAN complete the requirements while they are teaching. The ones I've seen usually have a 1 or 2 year period to complete.

Oh, and the reason to do so is that teachers get paid a lot more than teachers aides.

Good for you, it's really difficult to find teaching jobs where I live, there are thousands of out of work teachers per opening. I have a teaching degree and have actually considered trying to work as a teaching aid because it pays more than subbing and usually comes with benefits. I wish you luck!!

What a great opportunity! Who'd have thought getting a degree in criminal justice would help you get a teaching job! Congrats!

well i considered getting my teaching degree, (thats what i originally went to school for, but changed my mind after 3 years) but with that comes more responsibilities. im not sure im at a point in my life where i want to do that just yet. i haven't had an outside job in over 5 years, its hard getting back in there. i'll prob. consider it when cooper gets older, but for now, i think subbing or teachers aid will be good for us.
