Thinking about quitting
There have been some major changes within our office; most I find fair and not so unreasonable like; at first they didn't say much about us surfing the net "some" at work. Recently they took a whole group of ppl in and wrote them up for it. Luckily for what ever reason I escaped this. I only seen it as unfair due to they never said don't do it before and now ppl are getting wrote up instead of a verbal first. They have totally cracked down on ppl visiting which again I pretty much keep to myself with the exception of 3 ppl and try to watch how much I talk to them. There are more changes I will leave unmentioned due to the #, basically we are restructering and our old boss is trying to crack down to show she's been in control this whole time. My problem came Thurs when we got our huge snow storm. I live an hour from work and the snow storm hit about 9am. At 10 I'm waiting for them to tell us those who need to head home can go. We'll I was in for a sad suprise when they gathered us all and told us we can't keep you but if you do go home it's going to be considered an absence (we're allowed 3 absences a month or 5 total a year before we are in trouble). Their solution to us staying and not being able to go (without the absence) was we work for a hospital and they will put us all up in beds over at the hospital if we get snowed in. We are a billing dept and were told that we are all considered esential personel to the hospital, that if there were a disaster we would be put to work over at the hospital. My problem with this is Pfft first is I don't get paid what they get paid not go home to my family, second no one ever told me in my interview that this may ever arise and I made it very clear how far I lived, third wth do they think we are all suppose to do with our kids? I'm a single mom and yeah I could ask my mom to watch the kids but overnight (but I be working for for 8 bucks an hr not my mom would charge me)? I don't know what is your opinion about this? I really think they have went too far and all the changes are making me very unhappy to the point I have been sick at my stomache all week. It's all the little stuff that everyone is tattling on others for that is getting me down about my job. Dbf is begging me to just quit b/c of the stress we could make it on his pay no problem (I wouldn't have health insurance though) but I keep thinking it's going to get better well till this annoucement. I'm bummed TIA

Sorry for the situation you are in. I worked as a therapist in a hospital and I too was considered "essential" personel. This means that the hospital is able to bill (your job) insurances if I treat patients. If there is no one there to treat patients or to do the paperwork for the billing of said patients, the hospital loses money.
I too have put my health and life at risk because I was "essential." Are you able to find another job that is more local to you?
Stress is a very important factor in any work situation. If you can't change it, you either have to leave it or "let it go."

Can you find another job? I think Lowe's and Starbuck's both offer health insurance to PT employees.

Bummer! If you feel like you will be unhappy and can't deal then I would say go. If you can't afford to just walk make sure to line up another job before you leave. It is always hard when there are changes in management and styles maybe if you can stand it stick it out for a bit after the new managers point is made perhaps things will even out. Good luck

The last job I had was a fiberglass plant that HAD to run 24 hours a day so when it snowed we had to stay until our shift was over and had to come in no matter what.
They would send people to get us, I spent almost 4 hours in snowstorm picking people up only to have them turn around and take us back home 4 hours later.
In your situation I think I might have to look for another job if possible.
