My Gma just sent me my great-grandmother's cast iron tree stand and it is sorely in need of love. Anyone have any ideas on restoring/re-seasoning it? Can I oil it and put in the oven like my cookware?

Is it rusty or what? If it's painted, you'll need to strip that off first.

If you need to deal with rust, the easiest way is to use electrolytic rust reduction. Google that and you'll find info on it. The piece will need to be reseasoned immediately because it'll start to rust right away if you don't.

You should be able to season it the same way you do your cookware.

We just cleaned a bunch of cast iron that was rusted from the flood. (someday and I can't wait, I won't be using the "f" word in my posts.)We wire brushed the rust off (bit that fit on the end of an electric drill) finished with steel wool if needed and liberally oiled and popped into oven. Like new again. :thumb: Your tree stand sounds like a nice piece and it'd be neat if you could post before and after pics.
Good luck!
