Using Up Freezer Items

I am so happy to have finally used up several years old items from my freezer today!!! Yes, thats right Years Old! About 5 years ago someone gave me several tubs of mixed fruitcake fruit and a package of whole dates. Not needing them in the dead of summer I put them in my then semi emtpy deep freezer. Well over the years they have moved down to the bottom. And even thought I've got a posted list of items in the freezer they haven't been used til today. I got a list of new cookie recipes in a paper I read and they was one using both the dates and the fruitcake fruit. Well I dug them out this am, thawed them and added a touch of water to the dates. Nuked them.
Mixed them all in the recipe and baked. Didn't tell anyone in the house what I'd done just put out the plate of fresh cookies. A hit! Gee, these are good mom!
I'm so pleased that A) Those items are now out of my freezer
B) They still tasted good!!??!!
So as a word to others don't give up on something a little past its prime it may still work out.

Good for you and they tasted good. I've used expired things too and it's always been good.

This is so true! Way to go! I don't dare let DH know what's in our freezer and in what state. He just looks at me helplessly when I tell him to get something from the freezer. His chance of finding what I want is pretty slim. Poor freezer organization on my part. But I do have a list on the lid of everything in there...for the most part.

I just did the same thing with some dried currants, I've had them 4 to 5 years! I defrosted and tasted them, no freezer burn taste at all, woohoo. I made welsh tea cakes that turned out awesome.

Glad to hear about your currants. I've got a couple of packages of them too that I'm planning to turn into tea bread this week!
Also used up a package of sticky minimarshmellow in a bar recipe that is already half gone and only one day old.
