Christmas Ham Dilemma
Ok here is my problem. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I'm making a pinapple ham for christmas and just realized that i only have canned pineapple. I have been frantically looking up recipes and all i find are ones with brown sugar, cornstarch or some other ingredient that i dont have. I can't possibly go out and buy anything and now i'm worried that my ham wont be glazed. Is there any recipe out there that i can make with canned pineapple and regular white sugar?? Is there a way to cook down crushed pineapple in order to make it like a sauce or glaze?

I use canned pineapple, I stick the sliced pineapple to the hame with dried cloves (you could use toothpicks) and make a glaze out of the pineapple juice, sugar and cornstarch and bast it every 30 minutes or so!
Breath, it'll be fine with whatcha got!!!
If you have crushed pineapple just use the whole can with the cornstarch and sugar for a glaze and bast it as it is heating!Proud wife to Randy

(duh me). I only have pineapples in a can, i have one can of crushed pineapple and one can of sliced. the only other ingredient that i have is white sugar. I just recently moved in and dont do much baking so i haven't filled the cabinets with bakings goods. Can i just use white sugar with the pineapple?

I have baked hams with pineapple on without using anything else, just the pineapple. They always turn out yummy. They are not glazed but they do taste good.

hello!
perhaps I can help.... maybe not...
all brown sugar is white sugar and molasses. Most don't have molasses on hand but do have... Pancake syrup!
to 1 cup of sugar add 1-2 tablespoons of molasses. for light brown sugar 1 tablespoon, the more molasses you add, the darker it gets.. but not so much it turns the sugar to liquid.
though in your case.. making a glaze...
no corn starch? I hate to suggest flour but flour will work.
Cornstarch (for thickening)
Amount: 1 tablespoon
Substitute: 2 tablespoons flour
TIP: Liquids thickened with cornstarch will be somewhat translucent while flour gives a more opaque appearance. Cornstarch will thicken a liquid almost immediately. A flour-based sauce or gravy must be cooked longer to thicken and will have a floury taste if undercooked. Joy of Cooking cookbook (Scribner, 1997) advises when using flour as a substitution for cornstarch in sauces and gravies, that you simmer it for about 3 minutes AFTER it has thickened to help avoid a raw taste of flour.
Cornstarch-thickened liquids are more likely to thin if overheated or cooked too long. Regardless of whether you use cornstarch or flour, mix it with a little cold water or other cold liquid, about two parts liquid to one part thickener, before adding it to the rest of the liquid . (Note: when you mix flour with fat to make a roux for use as a thickener, you would not dissolve it in liquid first.)

enjoy your dinner.. and don't tell a soul you substituted anything!

I would just used the pineapple in a can w/ the juice in the can. Use the juice to glaze it.

Brooke - Love the suggestions!!!! Pancake syrup how creative and true!
I beileve I've got a recipe around here somewhere that calls for crushed pineapple and coke. Just having a sr. moment and can't put my hands on it. Almost everyone has coke around and flovred cokes with cherry or vanilla would work too.
