--FOOD:
Candies and chocolate of any kind (regular for kids, and gourmet for adults)cookies, brownies, assorted nuts, and dried fruits.
(When I was a kid, I used to love to get those chocolate "gold coins," like a pirate's treasure, in those little net bags.)
--CLOTHING:
Gloves, scarves and mittens, hosiery, tie pins, socks, belts, handkerchiefs, slippers, rain gear, coin purses, wallets, card holders (and other things that can be worn or used year round.)
--KITCHEN STUFF AND GADGETS:
Potholders and mitts, towel sets, utensils, mugs, measuring cups, refrigerator magnets, wooden spoons, egg slicers, graters, garlic presses, etc.
--GARAGE ITEMS:
Small tools, cordless, ergonomic and others such as:
a stud finder, tire gauge, nails and screws, screw drivers, rulers, etc. and the organizers to put them in.
--HOME AND DECORATIVE ITEMS:
Candles, potpourri, picture rames...anything small. Christmas tree decorations and other holiday items are also possibilities.
--OFFICE AND COMPUTER:
Office supplies of all kinds that are fairly small are good. I love to get pens, post-it-notes and lined note cards!
--TOYS:
Matchbox cars, silly putty, jacks, slinkys, balls, playing cards, magnets, magnifying glasses, yo-yo's, etc. and the list of small inexpensive, but appreciated toys is endless!
--LEISURE:
Everyone appreciates magazines, and books, as well as gift cards or certificates for savings at restaurants, movies, music and video stores.
For him I pick things up when I find them on sale and he never knows what he'll find in his stocking-usually it's things he will use but never think to get himself--last year included fix-a-flat for his bike, chapstick, a ski wax product and no fog for when he goes skiing and a magazine that I had gotten him a subscription to.
Our little one isn't so little anymore. His stocking has always been themed. Last year all art supplies, the year before all mini cars and trains, and the year before that it was a Disney video and the matching ornament for him to hang on the tree.
Oh I forgot to mention those little packages of handwarmers are nice. You can find them at like Dicks Sporting goods. They are great to stick in pockets or in glove compartment for those really cold winter days.
Everyone here is getting gloves in their stockings, fruit of course, candy obviously, lol, can't go wrong with that!
We also usually buy some "cute" pack of toothpaste with matching toothbrush for ds's stocking...only time I buy the "cutsie" ones is for Christmas/Easter Baskets/birthday...which works out well since that's pretty well spread out!
For a guy...how about some fancy scented shaving creme? Something that smells REALLY nice...
My little guy would probably like a can of shaving creme all his own...he has a fake razor he uses to "shave" -- he's done that since he was about 2....he's seven now...
Small board books, crayons, paints, coloring books, stuffed animal, baseball cap, tshirt, stickers, small ball would be good ideas for a toddler's stocking.
One thing I have done for DH the last couple of years is to put gift certificates to fast food restaurants in his stocking. There are a couple by his office. This way when he is stuck there late, he doesn't have to worry about wether or not he has any money.
I know it's a bit early, but I've got a list going with gift ideas and what I've bought, etc. My girls will be 5 1/2 and 3 days shy of 3 at Christmas time. Here is what I have so far:
-character toothbrushes & toothpaste
-bubbles (thanks Sara )
-silly string
-small sticker book
-candy
-barrettes/scrunchies
I only need a couple more ideas and may take some off of the list I have.
I have been stocking up on those loss leader crayons and glue sticks this month just for that. I like the idea of special frilly socks, do they still make underoos? Candies, little books, chapstick, sidewalk chalk or bathtub toys, hair accessories and maybe a gift certificate for a special one on one day out with mom or dad.
A box of clothes, etc for playing dress up. Thrift stores pull out their old formals etc at Halloween. I found a white lace dress in about a size7 or 8 that was perfect for playing a bride. Then I made a bouqet of artificial flowers and a used a headband and attached an old lace curtain for a veil. My daughter played for hours with it until she didn't fit the dress anymore.
Another hit is a box of bandaids in their favorite character print.
You have to "ration" them or they'll be gone in a day!
