Default Christmas gift for my BIL

I was thinking about doing a tail mix for the men in the family. My BIL is on the low carb diet (I think that is the one, if not it is the one with little to no bread).

I really don't know anything about this diet. Is there anything I need to make sure not to include, like maybe pretzels or is this completely off the list for him?

Sugar or honey-Like chocolate chips, and sweetened products
    raisins or any dried fruit
    any wheat products

that is trail mix. Holy Shmoly! It's going to be hard to make a low carb trail mix. Maybe someone else can offer better advice.

Nuts and seeds are the only thing I can think of that are low carb.

If it were me and I needed a low carb gift I think I'd do a homemade beef jerky. Lots of sugar-free ones that can be done in the oven if you don't have a dehydrator.

It's pretty much off the list for him. The only ingredient he can eat is the nuts, and *maybe* a small amount of dried fruit. No M&Ms, no pretzels, no granola...

If it's got sugar in it, or is made from any kind of flour/wheat/grain or anything starchy like potato, rice or corn it is a carbohydrate and is not in his meal plan.

That was what I was thinking. I don't think I could do that diet.

pollypurebred39, I never thought about making jerky in the oven. I may have to Google it because that is one of the few things my entire household likes and I feel is too expensive to buy on a regular bases.

I made spiced pecans using butter, Chinese 5 Spice blend and roasted them. I made a few to try and I think I ended up adding a little Splenda to the mix before doing a big batch.

You could also do a curried nut and/or spiced chickpeas (though they contain carbs, they are high in fiber and protein).

I am interested in seeing what you put together for him. There are a lot of good ideas already. All I could think of was a variety of nuts.

I don't know if he is big on nuts but I can find out.

He is an EMT and works 24hr shifts. Some kind of nut snack sounds like it would be good for him. I could divide it up in snack bags and put in a wide mouth canning jar. That way he could grab a couple on the way out the door.

Pumpkin spiced pecans and the Chinese 5 spice ones sound wonderful!! Any recipes available?
