    Talking Boys and sewing..

For a few weeks now both my boys ages 13 and 14 have been wanting to sew on the sewing machine. My neighbor moved and left me his machine a month ago and the 13 year old proudly stated that it was HIS!!! So I have decided that maybe they can make Christmas gifts. My thoughts are pot holders and some other sewing things, but I am not sure what.. I could use some ideas. I have scrap denim, and quite a bit of fabric, some trims and buttons and such.. Any ideas? Thanks in advance..

How nice to see them all excited about sewing. This site will give you all kinds of ideas. I especially like how they instruct them to start off with small easy projects and build from there so they don't get overwhelmed and gradually improve their skills. Projects

How cool that your young teen boys are ignoring stereotypes. Sewing is such a useful skill for them to learn. How about a raggy quilt or wall hanging out of the denim? They don't need to actually learn quilting to do these, they are 'quilt as you go' and with denim would not even need batting. Just google rag quilt and you will get all kinds of hits for free patterns and instructions.

They could make pillows for their rooms from denim, or shop aprons if there is enough of it.

I know its silly, but they may get picked on now and later for sewn pot holders.

One of my first sewing projects was curtains for my room. I bought the material dyed it the color I wanted and then made the curtains.

As I got better at sewing I routinly re-made them.

It made my room a little more mine and gave me something to be proud of without putting up with teasing from anyone but my MOM for my Ugly curtains IHO.

Wallets. Esp. custom designed wallets for what they actually carry in it. You could even introduce them to project planning by letting them do the research into whether they should use a leather or fabric needle if they have a fabric inside and a durable leather outside.

Be interesting to know if anyone has book suggestions for them to get started with garment making. Almost every beginning sewing book for garments I have seen starts of with some sort of skirt.

Darlene that is a neat site.

I can't even thread the sewing machine but both my high school aged boys can sew. They learned in school. The younger made me a beautiful reverse-able apron for mothers day
