I need a packaging idea
I'm going to be making several Scottish shortbread mix gifts. I just reviewed the recipe and it yields over 2 cups. I had thought I was going to use pint canning jars, but that will not work. Quart jars are major overkill, there would be a lot of empty space.
Any suggestions on how to package this?~~~

Do you sew? Make some plaid bags.......put the mix in a ziplock and put it inside the bag. Either put a drawstring in it........or tie it with ribbon or even string.
Or......check out your local thrift shop...for containers or Xmas tins. But again, I would put it in a ziplock and THEN inside the tin......especially a used one from the thrift shop. Our thrifts always have tons of tins.......and this is about the time of year that they are getting out the Xmas ones.

Love the idea of using plaids in whatever packaging you choose!!

Since I don't know your recipe, is there a simple way to decrease the ingredients slightly so they fit in a pint jar?
If not, you might look into the "disposable" plastic containers like ZipLock, Glad, or Rubbermaid.
They're usually pretty cheap and come in somewhat odd sizes.
WalMart and Kroger have their own brands for even less. Dollar stores might have them cheaper, too.Jean

Hmmm...I don't know Jean, maybe? It's a rather simple 3 ingredient recipe, so maybe.
FF- Ha! Great minds think alike! I had planned on using plaid ribbon around the jar tops. Still will keep plaid in the mix.
The thing is, these gifts must be really inexpensive. Buying new containers makes the costs go up. If I bought something new to put them in, the containers would cost more then the actual mix. It's only flour and sugar really, and not much at that. I really need to think about this. I wonder if I have any plaid material socked away? Hmmm...I'll need to look.
Thanks Ladies!~~~

What about using a baggie liked mentioned earlier but putting it in a brown paper lunch sack?. All of my wrapping for christmas is always done with Kraft paper and trimmed with twine, raffia, and ribbon. I have also used plaid homspun material cut into strips with pinking shears. For the bag I would place the baggie inside, roll down the top a couple of turns, make 2 holes with a hole punch and thread whatever I was using as ribbon through the holes and tie. It always looks great. I've used this type wrapping for years....mostly because it matches my holiday decor which I consider a rustic homespun look. It's easy to keep on hand and you can use it for other occasions throughout the year....just dont use christmas'y' ribbon.

Tami! Oh My Gosh!! That's how I packaged my dipped dog biscuits that I sold. The only exception was I stamped a Scotty dog on the front! Hmm...I wonder if it would be a cute idea to package it like that with the Scotty dog stamp? I wouldn't want people to think I was giving them something for their dogs.
This is perfect with or without the Scotty dog! I was starting to worry that the packaging was going to be more then the gift. Which would defeat the purpose entirely. Each one of these mixes should cost about 25 cents to make. The paper bags are about 2 cents each, I already have some homespun plaid material, so I'm good with that. The total project should cost about 27 cents each to make!
Thank you!!!~~~

GONL - I make my own bags from the brown wrapping paper that Lakeshore stuffs all of its orders in - and since our school orders a lot from that company and everyone knows to not throw that valuable paper away - I am always stocked well for each year!!
Polly - I think you should use the paper bag technique with the plaid ribbon and stamp a Scottie dog on it also - they'll figure it out!!....and it would look so cute......and I love Scotties!! Hint Hint!! - why don't you post a stamping of the Scottie? Please - or drop one in the mail to me ;0Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.
