Default Need idea's for a special gift

I don't know how many of you remember, or even know...but I had a daughter I placed for adoption.

I feel horrible because I haven't given her a real gift since she was a newborn. She turned 4 this year. It's an open adoption so she knows all about me, and from what they say she thinks it's great she has another mommy. So it's not like the gift from me would confuse her...

I can't think of what I should get for her though....
I don't know if I want it to be something like a toy that will be forgotten in a year, or a momento type thing that her parents will hold on to her till she gets older. I also don't want it to be inappropriate.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I don't want to pass up another year and not give her anything yet again
(well I have atleast sent her cards in the past)

maybe you could do both?? because she is at the age TOYS are everything. i'm just afraid she won't understand. so, if you could do both, maybe buy a small toy and make a small gift for rememberance. (?????) just my opinion though.

What about going to one of those make-a-bear places? You can make the bear yourself... putting yourself into the gift... but yet, it's still a toy that she'll love.

I think you are amazing for having the courage to put your baby up for adoption. It really takes a special person to do that. And to keep sending cards to let her know you think of her is something special....

Now to your question (sorry i'm pregnant and feeling sentimental..lol) I would definitely get some sort of toy..maybe a special doll..but i was thinking for the keepsake part..what about a locket with your picture that she could keep with her alwaqys? Or maybe her adoptive parents could keep for her but she could wear for special occasions?

Just a few suggesestions i'll keep thinking..

I agree with all of the ladies here but this is what I was going to say as well. I think it would be a great idea

I like the locket idea as well. Something she can have to always remember you by.

I would also buy her some special toy. Have you talked to the adoptive parents to see what she really likes? I bet they could help you pick out something she would enjoy.

I know that last year they said she was already getting into barbies so maybe I can get her one of those...and just try and get a really cool one (not that i know anything about which barbies are cool now)

The locket idea is a good one, what types of stores would sell them? (i just never see ads for those so I really have no clue)

Heather - I too gave up a child for adoption....mine's a bit stickier than yours & I shall spare you all the ugly details, suffice it to say I was not always the perfect angel you all know and love today! ....Last year, I sent him a picture in a very nice frame of he & I when he was first born (don't know if you have those - I only had one, a snapshot)....I had it enlarged at Wal-Mart & spent more than I normally would on a frame! His mom says he loves it & keeps it on his dresser - he's 13...Just a thought.....

I'll ask Belle about the cool Barbies for ya!!

Oh Debbie I'm sorry to hear that the adoption wasn't so smooth for you...if you want to share it with me, feel free anytime

That is a wonderful idea about the picture!!! I don't know why I never thought of that before? I have lots of pictures of me holding her in the hospital that I absolutely cherish...thank you so much!

    Heather,

In the center of malls they have these little kiosks that sell all sorts of things you can get engraved. I can't remember the name of them (Things Remembered or something like that) anyway they should have lockets and you could even get it engraved with whatever you want.

I love Diana's idea. maybe give her a bear with her name on it, and give her adoptive parents a special momento to give her when she is older.

Do you sew, if so, how about a small quilt?
