Wink In case you ever wonder.....

Tonight at GW's Christmas Party, one of his Officers was introducing herself to the kiddos...she matter-of-factly said, "you may all call me Melissa," & each of the kids told her their names......when Belle introduced herself, the Lieutenant said, "Oh - Belle - just like on Beauty & the Beast".....Thankfully, Belle had enough couth to wait till the LT was out of earshot before she said, "AAARRRGGG - why does everyone think that!"

So that got me thinking....wonder how many folks really think she was named from "Beauty & the Beast" which brings me to why I'm posting this in this particular forum.....

My all-time favorite classic movie is "A Christmas Carol"....in his younger years, Ebeneezer Scrooge fell in love with a young woman but was reluctant to marry her, she dumped him and moved on to greener pastures, he was heart-broken but became a bitter man in response to yet another "shun".....his true love's name ~ why Belle of course! It's one of those things that everybody knows, but nobody remembers! I mean - could you have honestly told me the name of Ebeneezer's love before you read this?!

So that's where Belle got her name.....terribly fascinating, I know - but hey - it's late, I'm exhausted, and I'm kind of at the punchie stage!! Thank you once again for your indulgence!!

I didn't even know Scrooge had a loved one (how dumb am I then? ~ don't answer that Debbie coz I know you will LOL )

Look on the bright side ~ When I only had 2 kids they were called Oliver (after Oliver Reed ~ and everybody knew that), Lucy (because her Dad liked it) and we had a Dog and a Cat called Junkie and Whizz.

One of our 'friends' Decided Lucy was named after the song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (because her Dad also loved the band) That song was about L.S.D. (drugs)

Oliver Reed was an alcoholic, Junkie speaks for itself, and Whizz is Speed (another drug)

How good did that make us look as parents!

Oh, I love a Christmas Carol also, (and for what it's worth I never thought Belle was named for "Beauty and the Beast".) I just love old movies. In fact I thought about getting out my movies of "Miracle on 34th Street" and "It's a Wonderful Life" while I clean the living room and Kitchen.

Well Beauty and the Beast never dawned on me, but then neither did A Christmas Carol and it is my favorite Christmas movie! I like the one wiht Patrick Stewart best, probably because I heard a tape of his performance of it, when he did all the characters! He is awesome!
Belle, darling you have a lovely name and I think someday soon folks will see it as something all your OWN!

I didnt think of Beauty and the Beast either, but to be honest here I do always think of a southern beauty. Belle, were you born in the south.
Debbie, I named my youngest son "Shane" after a band that was performing at the college I was attending. The music was SO RUCKUS and loud that it made him dance in my tummy. When I saw that the name of the band was Shane, I decided that I liked that name. He is certainly no rocker either~

Nope, I never thought of Beauty and the Beast, either. Don't worry, Belle, people will make up their own ideas about your name, no matter what it is. Like Melissa said, someday people will see it as YOURS.

I love the stories of how other kiddos got their names!! And yes Robin, Belle is a southern born gal!

My girls have always thought I ws strange because of where their names came from! (Will is obviously GW2 - which - originally - was given to his dad from a great uncle!) But Katie was named after a gal from a soap opera I used to watch when I was preggers - well the character's name was actually "Natalie" on All My Children but the actress was Kate Collins and "Kate" was so Irish, I had to have it...she rolls her eyes (well, about everything really) everytime she says "and I was named after a soap opera character!"

Belle - well - you know her story now......

And Renee was - well - this will sound somewhat bizarre - but I guess no worse than a cat named after an amphetamine! Renee was born when we found out I had cancer & was not having any more babies - so she was named after the Patron Saint of both little girls & sterility! Kindda fitting in a pitiful sort of way!

I guess it never really struck me as odd to name my kiddos "after" someone - I was named after both Deborah Kerr & Debbie Reynolds - both 50's & 60's pin-up girls - and aren't I just continuing with that drop dead figure & beauty!

So hey - more chapters in the "things to say 'who cares' about" volumes!!

What great stories. I have one of my own....

Ds Seth is named after a character in a George Clooney movie. "Seth" was successful in fighting vampires. (From Dusk till Dawn)

DD Elizabeth Gracen is a compromise. Her daddy wanted to name her Gracen after a character in the TV show Models INC. (early 90's?) I wanted something a little more common. We agreed on Elizabeth. (my aunt's middle name and his paternal grandma's real name) I did however expect to spell Gracen differently, but I figured I better let him spell it that way so he wouldn't mess it up LOL

Carolyn -

Mel - too cool!! I love hearing about this kind of stuff! (I also like hearing about what color toenail polish people like! )

Katie's middle name is Nicole - "little Irish girl" & Belle's *first name* is Deborah - after moi(!) & Renee's middle name is Gwena - after one of GW's great-grandmothers which continued in that line's tradition of every child having a "GW" name!
