That is a great idea! And a great price for fabric, LOL! I'm also one to wrap one gift inside of another. I crochet wash/dish cloths from that cotton yarn and then wrap a pretty bar of soap inside of it and tie it up with raffia or ribbon or a strip of homespun.
How about this? Take two pieces of scrap fabric the same size and the size you need to wrap your gift, place them WRONG sides together, then wrap up your gift...I'm thinking this would work well for a bottle of wine or a bottle of flavored dipping oil, etc.
I remember seeing a sachet that was made this way. Two squares of fabric wrong sides together again, with a layer of tulle netting or something sheer and sparkly in-between. Place potpourri in the center, then tie it up with ribbon or lace and make drawer-sized sachets. You could put cedar chips in the center, too, and make a hanger when you tie the ribbon for hanging in a closet (to keep the moths away.)

Have you ever made the fabric pieces up into gift bags? Really pretty and reusable.
One year, I made gift bags from teeny to ... big enough for my 2-yr-old to climb in. When Santa arrived, he just stuffed the presents into the gift bags & tied the strings.2012 Knitting in progress

I too love to make reusable gift bags.
I make the bags for my mini pumpkin chocolate chip breads that I give out at Christmas, in my gift sets...usually a theme of some sort each year. I also make bags for my mixes and dips too! People love it!!
