    Default Holiday rag garland

    ~Holiday Rag Garland~
Gather up your scraps, your sewing machine and a good, sharp
scissors. A rotary cutter is a wonderful tool to have for this.
Cut two inch strips across the width of your fabric. The strips can
be any length you want. Cut off the selvages. You'll need a lot of
strips and be sure to use light and dark, bright and dull fabrics.
You'll be surprized how good some of those ugly fabrics look when
    you're done.

Layer up three random strips, one on top of the other. Set your
sewing machine to a larger stitch. Sew right down the center of the
strips. You can eyeball it or use a marking on your machine.
    Backstitch when you first start.

When you come close to the end of the first strips, add more by just
overlapping them a bit - a quarter inch or so. The ends are usually
uneven and that's okay - they won't be so bulky that way. Make the
garland as long as you want. Backstitch at the end of the last strip
    and even it off.

Using a scissors with a really sharp point, cut into the strip at
1/4" intervals, stopping just short of the stitching line. You don't
want to cut it in half! You can fold the strip in half and cut
through all the layers at once if you wish. This part is boring -
watch a movie or something while you do it.

Go to your laundry tub and saturate the garland with hot water. Wring
it out and throw it in the dryer. Dry it really well. Fluff it up a
little and wrap it around your tree.

    Wasn't that easy?
    - those threads are a mess. Don't forget to clean out the dryer!!!
Make these great little rag garlands for every season. Twist them
along your mantel, in a wreath, hanging on your staircase. Lots of
    fun to do!
