homemade tomato vinegar - makes an excellent christmas gift
This vinegar makes a lovely gift for the homecook. I bought some organic raspberry and apple vinegar recently and it cost $12. Making this vinegar will cost about $2 per bottle. This recipe may be modified for most herbs and some fruit. Make sure you prepare the bottles, herbs and fruit properly. It's going to be stored for a long time so it must be done properly and your work area, hands and utensils must be scrupulously clean.
TOOLS
Glass bottles, glass jug, saucepan, funnel, coffee filters, screw caps or corks. The preparation of bottles and corks, as well as storing, is covered well at this site: http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/publication...d_vinegars.pdf
INGREDIENTS
- ΒΌ cup semi-dried tomatoes, the recipe for these is here: slow roasted tomatoes
- 7 fresh basil leaves
- small sprig of rosemary
- white wine vinegar
METHOD
- Measure the amount of vinegar you need to fill your bottle and place that amount in a saucepan over medium heat. Heat the vinegar to just below boiling point, take it off the heat when you see the first bubbles start to form. All it to cool.
- Poke the tomatoes and herbs into a pre-sterilized bottle. Pour the cooled vinegar into the bottle until it is full. Put the pre-sterilized cap or cork on the bottle and store it in the refridgerator or a cold cupboard for 3 weeks.
- Now you can filter the vinegar. Pour the vinegar through the coffee filter and into a glass jug a few times until all cloudiness is gone. When you're happy with the look of the vinegar, pour it into the pre-sterilized bottle you've chosen for it. Add a couple of extra pieces of tomato and 3 new basil leaves. Secure the top with a pre-sterilized screw cap or cork.
- Add a nice label with the name and the date.
- The vinegar should be store in the refridgerator and used within 3 mouths.

I have never made these but really want to try! I've bought a few of the expensive ones @ TARGET to give as gifts last year. I found a few of them on clearance in MARSHALLS & TJ MAXX & kept some of those fancy bottles.Originally posted by Darlene

I know of the perfect gin bottle I've saved from a few years ago it's a pretty shade of blue w/berries, etc. embossed in the glass labeling the ingredients in this alcoholic drink Bombay Sapphire Gin!

While grocery shopping I pay attention to everything in the stores especially hanging up in the aisles (which are stocked by an outside distributor) & the mgr. told me to check each aisle, because they have no control as to where it may be placed
I just found it on the shelf next to the canned tuna & it was in the same row as the vinegars. I found this out because I wanted to buy a few more of the HUGE pretty colored carabiner rings called EZ-GRAB www.grabbertools.com there was only 1 purple one left & I needed a few
I have one for my keys & the spacing is big enough I can slip it over my wrist to carry my keys (I must always have them in my hand while shopping) I have attached my NEXTEL cell phone to this also until the little clip from a beeper chain got bent & now slips off the ring so I gotta fix this...otherwise it's great I have my license & CC in a flat change purse key chain w/a cellphone velcro attached on it...but since my cellphone is a bit fatter than these velcro straps I only put part of it in & flip the rest just on top!

Another JOKARI Idea
There's soo many things I have bought over the years from JOKARI I think my 1st item was bought in Lechters (similar to Bed,Bath & Beyond) it was a coupon holder w/pages to slip the coupons in so I dedicated one page to stuff I bought all the time & had multiple-coupons for the same item. I also use a 4X6 photo album w/a binder ring I got from TARGET it's got a colored purple see thru w/a zipper & I put most of the items I want to buy towards the front labeled w/the "correct stores sales" I shop @ different stores for the sales. & all the others in the back-end.

I have this Scrap'N Stor Carryall scrapbooking organizer w/stand too I bought it from QVC though!
I'm thinking about attaching this to the bottles. Great for decorative oil, vinegar & soap bottles!
There is no link to this pic for the Kitchen Cap! Stock No. 06039
