    Unhappy Trouble with Computer Speakers

I'm having trouble with my computer speakers.  Any time I play anything the sound has static with it.  I've checked the cords and everything seems lined up okay.  Not sure what to do next to resolve this.  Is there some type of test I can run?  I checked in the control panel, but nothing jumped out at me.  Thanks in advance for any help.

This might be interference. Did you notice a difference in the static?

    When is the static present?

Unplug your speakers and replug them in. Try playing with where they are plugged in. Maybe they are not in the right outlet.

I've tried that. The static seems to be whenever I use Windows Media Player to play music. I've used Real Player and don't seem to notice the static. I also noticed that it seems to have started when we switched from DSL to cable modem. Would this have an impact?

    Possible.
Is your computer plugged directly in the wall or in a power surge?

It's in a power surge protector.

I upgraded my Windows Media Player to the newest version, but that didn't help either. It seems to only happen when I use the Windows Media Player. I've tried lots of other things with sound, and no problem. Guess I may just quit using that player and start using our iTunes player or the Real player.

If it works with other players looks like it might be a software problem.

I had always used Windows Media Player as my primary player, so at first, I didn't realize it was related to just that program. I thought it must be my speakers. I'm glad it's not the speakers. Thanks for all your help!

one other thing you could do.
Is make sure you have the latest driver for your sound card.

    check on windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Would that come as an auto update from Microsoft? I have my PC set to auto update anytime there are new updates from Microsoft.

yes but sometimes Microsofts drivers might not be the most up to date drivers for your hardware.
You might want to check the manufacturer of your sound card on their website.
