Anit-Virus Software
My subscription is almost out and I don't want to pay the high $$ amount unless I have too of course. I don't want to be without any at all.
What program do you use?
How much does it cost?
Where can I get it?
Thanks for all your help.~*Michelle*~

I also use AVG. It has worked for me. I have had it for a couple weeks and it has already caught a virus for me.
Why buy one when you can get what you need for free???

Assuming you use windows...if you have Windows 2000 or XP, create and use a user account with limited access (inability to download and install programs, for example), and use only that account. Also look into disabling attachments that come in emails, so you explicitly have to ask to view attachments if you want to.
I'll be an ass here:
I use linux which is a free operating system, and I have zero problems with viruses, etc. I find computers to be very fun, so using linux is a fun activity. If you have access to a CD burner, you can try Knoppix which is Linux on a CD (doesn't install on your harddrive, unless you ask it to, and runs from CDROM). You can get one for minimal cost from here: http://knopper.net/knoppix-vendors/index-en.php

Sam,
Your advice regarding Windows account setup is great!
(What kind of OS setups accounts as root by default? )
You seem to be well versed using a computer's different interfaces.
Feel free to continue contributing suggestions and advices in the computer forums. I'm sure lots of members could benefit from your knowledge!

Thanks Gabe! I'll be happy to offer suggestions. I do use Windows at work and for my school assignments, so I kinda have to keep up with whatever gets tossed at me.Originally posted by Gabe

I had some major hacker attacks and lost almost everything so hubby bought me Norton with Internet Security.
I like it because I can report hackers of course that takes a little work but if they want to try aggravating me for more than just a couple of hits, I track down their domain and report them. At least that way I feel like I'm not being victimized.
Just the information that the software shows me about my connections ect has taught me a lot.
For instance, most software actions that interact with online users have been assigned a port #. When I first began this security nightmare I didn't know what a port was.
I can have every port on my computer observed by Norton and it will tell me what action if any has happened.
It will show me also, the connections I have while I am online. Some apps automatically update when you go online. Some may have other little buggers hidden in there. I get to see what is going on and if I am suspicious, I can disconnect it.
