Linux OS users?
Well, I think I accidentally erased my hard drive.
Since this computer was given to me (and new computers don't really come with software anymore...) I have no operating system to work on. I would like to keep this hard drive, since it is bigger than the one I am using now. However, I can't afford to buy a new Windows OS. So, I'm thinking about downloading Linux to see how it works. I've been searching the internet and there are SEVERAL versions of linux and I don't know which one to get. ARG!!! Can anyone help? I would appreciate any info on Linux...
Thanks!

Tiffany, just hold on until Gabe notices this thread. He knows about Linux and I'm sure he'll have a lot of helpful advice for you.

Do you have access to a CD burner?
I can try to help out, if you like

Ok.
I would recommend trying fedora distro, it worked fine for me + large user support group.

One thing you will notice using Linux is that there is also several Graphical User Interface available. Your are not limited to one like in Windows.
The two most popular are KDE and Gnome one that is gaining popularity is KFCE also.
After you download and install the CDs let me know. If you run into any trouble during the installation let me know.
If you want I can send give you my MSN or IM to answer questions you might have when your doing the installation.

Thanks for the help, Gabe. I have a version of linux burned to a disk and I have figured out how to get the computer to boot from a disk. So, here's my new problem. I will start to boot from the disk I burned, and it gets to the part that says
boot:
So I typed in linux26 (which I believe is the default)
and it says it is loading. It starts to load then it shuts itself off. Any suggestions on how to get it to boot up completely??? This is completely new to me. I have learned A LOT in my research today, so I am making progress

ok first thing first. You say you have Linux on a CD. What distribution is it? where did you get it from? It would help me to see what is the setup to install linux.
Commercial distribution are pretty much like installing windows and might be easier for you to install coming from a windows world.

I'm going to check out knoppix. I'm going to have to go to the store tomorrow and get some new disks. I used the last one tonight.

Here's the error Message I get trying to boot with Beatrix (I tried using linux26 nodma with the same result I was getting)
isolinux dish error 80, AX-4280 Drive 9f Boot failed press a key to retry.
Of course when I retry it does the same thing.
