Question Has anyone had the pop up thing that says.....

55 critical errors have been located on your harddrive. A crash is imminent. Go to (and then there are altnernating addresses and the one that I remember is) www.regfix.com and download the patch. Ofcourse I haven't done that b/c I can see it's a scamware pop up but here's the problem. I've run Adaware and Spybot and it's still popping up! This problem occurs not on the computer that I'm on at the moment but on an older laptop that we have that I sometimes surf on in the evenings. It's very maddening and pops up about every 5 minutes and has an annoying "ding" when it does. Can anyone help me get rid of the darned thing? I've googled it and found some links where people are talking about it but for the most part very little help at all.

Gabe it's Windows 2000 professional. We were using IE but have downloaded the latest version of Mozilla (7.1..?) and it's still popping up.

You have malware on your computer.

Remove windows and reformat. Install windows or Linux.

Not much for that fix. Sometimes it is easier to format the hard drive. Make sure you apply all patches from microsoft before connecting to the net. + Anti Virus and Firewall.

Hope this helps. Not much else to do I believe.

Thanks Gabe. I'm not sure we have the recovery disks to do that with. I'll get dh to check into it.

If you have a copy of a windows CD for another computer you could still install it if you know your windows 2000 license.
Here is a neat program to get this key on your computer. You might want to write it down also once it finds it.

Thanks Gabe. I'm just happy that it's not our "main" computer. I haven't had the time to fiddle with it just yet but plan to.
