I was wondering about that... if on Monday the store goes to 'return' the unsold Sunday papers, why would anyone care if the *unsold* inserts were removed? They're not going to sell the papers at this point, they're going to be trashed. Why would they want them back? Just to count that they didn't sell?

I don't condone stealing the inserts before they're sold, but by Monday morning when they are only so much more trash, who cares?

Actually, this is incorrect. I worked in newspaper advertising for years. Smartsource, Redplum, etc pay the paper to put the inserts in and at a higher rate because they also have to pay a stuffing cost. Some papers have machines that stuff inserts into the paper up to a certain thickness (number of pages), larger inserts are stuffed by hand. Some papers do all their stuffing by hand. The newspaper charges more for the weekend because most don't sell the daily paper, people read yahoo for their news, the weekend paper is what is keeping the newspaper open and in business. That is what pays the bills.

There's a woman who talks about groceries, Jill Cataldo, who has screen shots of what was purchased by one woman and what coupons she used, pretty obviously showing coupon fraud!

    Her website is JillCataldo(dot)com

I always buy my Sunday papers inside my local Wal Mart. That way I can look through them and make sure the correct number of inserts are inside. I used to buy them out of paper machines but had too many inserts missing.

Extreme Couponers show makes me sick to be honest. I've been couponing for 25 years and have never once felt the need to use coupons fraduantly, or clear shelves like this show promotes.

My problem with the extreme couponers is this--they seem to get more of a thrill getting massive quantities of stuff more than excitement about saving money.

I have wondered this myself, but what I think is this: it's not allowed because it discourages paper sales. If I knew I could wait til Monday to get all my circulars free from the store, I would never buy the paper...bad for business for the paper! I think they're onto that thought, at least that's my idea.
I don't understand how people justify stealing by saying 'well, people throw them out anyways'. I'm sure some do, but a lot of us don't. I wonder what % of papers are purchased only FOR the coupons?

I check my newspaper before I buy them but never through I had to check a magazine. I got the all of you (or something like that) magazine from wallmart. It had pages ripped out. I don't live close to walmart so it wasn't worthwhile to go back. I just ordered it online. My mom calls me an extreme couponer but I alway correct her. I am a frugal couponer. I don't clear shelves, or but massive amounts of things I don't need.

I always check my paper before buying it to make sure the inserts are still there.

It's sad that some people will steal the inserts.

I know that I was upset when I paid for two Sunday papers and when I got home found that both were missing the coupons!! I get all of my news online, so paid for the papers only for the coupons.

I honestly thought it was just my bad luck though. Had no idea this theft was going on or so widespread. I'll always check for my inserts before buying, or maybe I'll just subscribe.

    thanks for the info

I just started buying my newspaper inside CVS. They have them in stacks right at the front door so I can flip through to make sure the inserts are still there. PLUS I can have them scan my CVS card AND the "Green Bag Tag", that little green carboard leaf where every 4 times you scan it you get $1 ECB.

It is 6 one way and half a dozen on the other. I believe stealing is wrong, but people are doing these out of a sense of fear. I love to get coupons. I use to buy the paper every Sunday until the inserts starting dropping off. What good is a coupon if you can't use them. They are put to get you to buy the items. Now, they want you to scale back. Make up your mind. Companies are always trying to get you in the store with what gimmick they can use. Why shouldn't the average consumer use whatever gimmick to feed their family. I happen to like the
Extreme Couponing. But it is a show. I believe most of the food that they have stockpiled with spoil anyway. Plus to recieve that many inserts you are spending a lot of money to save money. Some how the logic escapes me. Can someong answer a question for me. If when the show is aired and we see the people with their stockpiles, why are they still shopping for more items. Isn't the purpose of a stock pile to be used. Just a thought.

    Something has changed.
The other day, the rep came in to count up the 'returns' and hands us a letter stating a new policy effective with today's paper. We must return the entire weekend paper to get credit, any papers with any missing inserts will not be eligible for credit.
So every time someone steals the insert for a paper, the store will have to eat the cost of that unsold paper. I asked the rep if this was due to people taking the coupon inserts, he said it was. Apparently a problem that has gotten HUGE since Extreme Couponers.
