The reason I related this story to the Patriot Act is because it has widened the scope of police powers, allowing a search like this to occur without fear of legal repurcussions.

Just saw this, WOW!! I would have been so shocked to have them in my house like that, questioning my hobby! What if I also used them for paper mache'? hahaha

Sorry that happened to your friend.

This article explains a bit more about the Patriot Act and other similar laws. Warning! Somewhat political!

no wonder yahoo news yesterday was reporting newspapers as being one of the ten things that will be going under soon. They should be happy people are wanting to still purchase the paper if only for the coupons, instead of just getting news on tv or the internet. If the weekly paper is as tiny as the one in our area (seriously, it's 3 pages through the week) then they should start trying to put coupons in every day to keep sales up. As for the mentally ill comment, what the heck is wrong with trying to keep some of your own money in your pocket and not those of the greedy companies that seem to want to control everything?

(the lady who followed your friend) was going to steal the papers.. (just kidding)... Good luck!

All I want is one paper, for the coupons. However, I keep getting the paper and find out the coupons have been stolen out.It gets old. I might try to lift a candy bar to make myself feel better.

I get my papers at the convenience store & I always have to check inside of them first, b/c there are some that won't have the inserts when they'r suppose to.

I bought 5 papers and some guy behind me asked if I was opening a newstand. I gave him a look. And he got all defensive saying he was just making small talk. There was probably 50-100+ papers still in the store. I made sure I got my receipt in case he called the cops.

Newspaper distributers don't necessarily get enough inserts to match the number of newspapers they get. My little brothers delivered papers and every sunday morning they had to put the ads in the newspapers themselves because they just kind of threw the lot at them and told them to sort it. Sometimes they ran out. Sometimes they had extra. If the newspaper doesn't have enough inserts for every single paper, subscribers get them first and they'll leave them out of some of the newstand papers. Do'nt assume your inserts are being stolen just because they're not there.

Now that you mentioned that, I remember helping with my parents' paper route & we had to do the same thing - it was a pain in the butt.

If I saw someone with multiple papers it wouldn't even cross my mind that they were buying them for coupons, much less stealing them. My first assumption would be that they contained a birth announcement, obituary or photo/story about a family member and they wanted extra copies to share.
