    Default What do you think?

Ok so we have both been on board with DR and are really new and trying to get it all figured out. My question is this. My husband currently has about 250 per month going into 401k. He is very solid on this and wont budge. Right now we need to get caught up on bills and he has taken a second job to do this. He is in the middle of reading TMM, so Im hoping that this will be addressed in the book so it might help him. Should I try to get him to stop the 401 until we are caught up or should I just leave it alone and let him decide this on his own? This has always been a place where we battle.

If you are behind on bills then YES quit contributions to the 401K.

All DR's books will say this.

Straight DR will say stop contributions. However, you can also factor in your and DH's age and how many more working years you think you will have. Also, factor in how much you have in retirement accounts already as well as how long it will take you to get out of debt (except the house).

If you can answer some of those questions, we can better tell you how hard you should fight to stop those contributions.

Well the DR says stop the 401k BUT I say this is your home and your spouse.

If he is committed enough to take a second job to get you guys back I track I would "let" him have this one.

It isn't as if he is ignoring the problem or not working towards fixing it.

Are you very far behind on the bills??

we didn't stop our 401K contributions altogether ~ we just lowered them to the point where we were taking full advantage of the company match...but nothing more.

Could you maybe get him to go down just to that point?

If I stop 401K, I can't contribute ANYTHING for 3 months. I know I'm missing the full company match, but I dropped my contribution to 1%. I'm hoping I can get current on bills and bump that up soon.
