I'm starting FPU tonight...
Tonight is my first of 13 classes for Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. Has anyone been through this? What did you take away from it? I'm really excited about starting it. Dh & I have a debt reduction plan in place but I have a feeling I'll learn even more to help us during the FPU.

We took the class over a year ago and lead the class at our church this past semester. It's so much more entertaining than you think it's going to be. You are really going to love it.
Prepare yourself to spend some time doing homework, particularly for the budgeting lesson. Prepare for lengthy discussions and growing pains. Don't expect perfection, but expect improvement each month. If you stick with it, it WILL work! Good luck. You are are doing yourselves a great service by taking this class.

I totally agree.
We did it almost 3 years ago and loved it. It has changed how we do a lot. We have a budget in place and use cash and save a lot!
Have fun and let us know what you think!

I took FPU a year ago, it was great for me. There was a lot of homework that took some time, but has been worth it. It really helped me get a plan together for daily living and to do the stuff I kept putting off. I really enjoyed it and felt like I made some progress along the way.

I had a great time at the first class. Definitely learned some things and can't wait for the next one. Dh & I already have a budget in place so this week's homework is already done. Yay! 12 more weeks to go...I'm really excited to see where this takes us. Of course I love anything finance related (dh thinks I'm nuts
) so this is right up my alley.

I have never taken the class. I found his TMMO book very informative and thought about looking into the FPU class. Good for you on taking the class.

Our second week went good too. I really liked the topic of marriage, kids, and money. In the past I handled the finances exclusively which caused a lot of stress and anxiety on my part. Dh has recently become more involved and after this last class he even helped me redo our budget. I never factored in things like supplies he needed for the yard or maintenance to our cars b/c it never crossed my mind. Having him help me with the budget was great! Also because he helped he is now way more interested in our finances and helping set financial goals for our family. Our budget is now workable instead of unattainable like before. I also loved Dave's approach to teaching children about finances. Our oldest is turning 3 next week so we will probably start doing some of the very simple things that he might be able to comprehend. So far I can't wait for class 3!

I have been thinking of joining an FPU class, but I can't convince myself to spend the money on it.
Is it worth taking even before I have my Emergency Fund in place? Or should I wait until I'm a little more financially stable?
Would I really take away a lot more than if I just read all the books?

I was just curious how much it cost? I looked and they are having one at a nearby church starting next week. But i didn't see a price. And is it more if there is both you and hubby?

I believe the cost is $95. (I'm not positive, because our church gave newlyweds a discount.) The cost is mainly for the kit you get - in it is the book Financial Peace Revisited, a big hard-back workbook, the full dvd set of all the lessons so you can return after the class is over and review, several "pass it on" freebies you can give to your friends, passwords to tools on Dave's website, and a lovely leather carrier for your cash envelope system. We don't use the envelope, but the carrier alone makes me want to!
The cost does not increase for two people - as long as you only need one kit. AND, you become a lifetime member of FPU - you can take the class as many times as you want and never pay for it again.
PoorCowGirl - I definitely believe it is worth it, if coming up with the cash is possible. The class is basically watching Dave on the dvd and sharing discussion with your classmates. The tools you receive in the kit are awesome, and really help to get you motivated.

Thanks for the reply! I noticed a church near me is starting a class on the 25th. I think I'll call and see if I can get in.

I think it is definitely worth the cost. Ours was $93 and we also paid the $7 for the shipping expenses so the church didn't have to cover it. Shipping was optional though. There is no extra charge for 2 people as long as you are sharing a kit. If you can find the money for the class I say go for it. It is great accountability and support!
