I think they are both good but I like Total money make over but because of all the person stories. The stories motivate me because I can see how real people did the steps and how it worked for them.

    Total Money Makeover for sure.

Not to be preachy Tony, but I hope that when you say you "ordered it" that you ordered it from your local library. I honestly wouldn't be spending money on buying books when you're trying to get started on paying down debt. Just IMHO. I must have checked out Total Money Makeover 4 different times just to keep reading it over and over before I felt I had the $17 to spend on it.

And from what I have heard, the books contain much of the same info. If you have one, why not just get the other from the library?

Hey Big Tony - how are things working out for you???

Either book is good, but Total Money Makeover seemed a little more 'nuts and bolts'

I guess that's just a different way of looking at it. For me, I needed every penny I had going towards getting the debt snowball rolling. I probably wouldn't pay for a second book by the same author, especially without asking about it first; Dave Ramsey hasn't changed his views on pretty much anything as far as I know. Reading his books can certainly motivate, but you don't need to own the book to read it.

Besides, still not sure if Tony even is paying for it or if he meant he was ordering it from the library. Not trying to be mean here, just giving my 2 ...... for whatever it's worth.

Q: What's the better tool, a tack hammer or a sledge hammer? Or what's the better tool, a hammer or a screwdriver?

A: Depends on what needs work.

Both books are good. There's overlap in functionality between the hammers but each focuses on different things. Different books address different problems (hammer and screwdriver) - and having the tools in the belt to deal with different situations is important.

So, just like you wouldn't use a hammer to tighten a screw, you need the right educational material to deal with the world of different types of financial situations.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I personally prefer FPR, but that's the first one I read. The personal stories in TMMO, while nice, don't really add to the program itself.

If I was going to recommend only two financial books, it would be FPR and The Complete Tightwad Gazette.

They're both good, but I like TMMO better. It just got me more fired up than FP.
